Job summary

WasteCo is seeking an experienced Driver Trainer to lead the development and delivery of driver training and competency programmes across our national fleet.

Reporting to the Group Health, Safety and Environment Manager, you will train, assess, coach, induct, and support Regional Driver Coaches to ensure safe, professional driving and compliance with NZ transport legislation.

Qualifications

• Current New Zealand Class 5 Driver Licence.
• Extensive heavy vehicle driving experience.
• Proven experience in driver training, coaching, and competency assessment.
• Strong knowledge of New Zealand transport legislation and safe driving practices.
• Experience with telematics and fleet management technologies.
• Excellent communication and relationship-building skills.
• Willingness to travel regularly throughout New Zealand.

• Conduct pre-employment driver assessments and competency evaluations.
• Deliver driver inductions and onboarding programmes.
• Train, mentor, and support Regional Driver Coaches across New Zealand.

• Promote a strong safety-first culture throughout the business.
• Analyse telematics and driver performance data to identify improvement opportunities.
• Support incident investigations relating to driving and vehicle operations.
• Maintain accurate training, competency, and authorisation records.
• Ensure compliance with transport legislation, company policies, and industry best practice.

Are you an experienced Class 5 driver with a passion for coaching, mentoring, and developing others?

WasteCo is seeking a proactive and experienced Driver Trainer to lead the development and delivery of driver training and competency programmes across our national fleet. This is a unique opportunity to play a key role in improving driver capability, promoting safe work practices, and supporting operational excellence throughout New Zealand.

About the Role

Reporting to the Group Health, Safety and Environment Manager, you will be responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining WasteCo's Driver Competency Framework. You will deliver driver training, assessments, coaching, inductions, and ongoing support to ensure our drivers operate safely, professionally, and in accordance with company standards and New Zealand transport legislation.

You will also establish and support a network of Regional Driver Coaches, helping to create a consistent national approach to driver training and competency assessment.

What You'll Bring

To be successful in this role, you will have:

• A current New Zealand Class 5 Driver Licence.
• Extensive heavy vehicle driving experience.
• Proven experience in driver training, coaching, and competency assessment.
• Strong knowledge of New Zealand transport legislation and safe driving practices.
• Experience working with telematics and fleet management technologies.
• Excellent communication and relationship-building skills.
• Strong organisational and planning abilities.The ability and willingness to travel regularly throughout New Zealand.

Desirable Qualifications

• Driver Instructor Endorsement (I).
• Train-the-Trainer qualification.
• NZQA Assessor qualification.
• SAFED qualification.
• Experience within the waste, transport, logistics, or civil infrastructure sectors.
• Additional licence endorsements including D, F, R, T, and W.
