Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki is a cultural leader in Aotearoa New Zealand. The Gallery is a cornerstone of Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland’s artistic life and offers transformative experiences that strengthen and enrich our communities.

We have an exciting opportunity for a Digital Content Specialist to help shape how the Gallery tells its stories and connects with audiences online.

You’ll have a strong editorial instinct: able to find the audience hook in a complex subject, shape a clear narrative, and work with copywriters, curators, and other specialists to translate their knowledge into engaging content.

You’ll also be confident using audience and performance data to understand what is working, identify opportunities and continually improve our content across the website and email channels.

You’ll be embedded in the Gallery while also being part of the Content & Channels team at Tātaki Auckland Unlimited - the region’s cultural, events, and destination agency.

In a typical day, you will:
  • Deliver the Auckland Art Gallery content strategy, developing and coordinating an ongoing pipeline of editorial content across the Gallery’s content pillars and audience needs (in collaboration with the Gallery’s Managing Editor – Publications).
  • Work alongside Gallery’s Managing Editor with subject matter experts including curators, the Kaupapa Māori team, Brand Studio and event leads to shape content briefs, narrative angles and deliverables, while coordinating accurate and engaging event and exhibition listings across the website.
  • Manage the Gallery website, including exhibition and event listings, editorial content, plus working with stakeholders to enhance other priority pages.
  • Identify, plan and commission digital content, including articles, videos, supporting exhibition campaign content and other storytelling formats, including managing the development of content briefs.
  • Optimise website content for accessibility, search, AI and audience needs.
  • Work with Digital Services and other specialists on website functionality, technical developments, bug resolution and optimisation where required.
  • Manage, build, and report on eDMs, including delivering the Gallery’s new eDM strategy.
  • Develop an editorial approach to planning and curating email content alongside refining Salesforce Marketing Cloud use, supporting personalisation and automated customer journeys.
  • Use analytics, search behaviour, AI reporting and audience insights to understand content performance. Plus oversee and work with our data partner to optimise GA4, Google Console, and GTM for the Gallery.
  • Lead regular digital content reporting, translating data into clear recommendations and actions.
  • Ensure digital content is optimised for audience needs, search engine optimisation and AI visibility and emerging digital discovery behaviours, while meeting the Gallery’s brand and digital guidelines.

We’re looking for a Digital Content Specialist who combines creative flair with technical capability, and who’s motivated by the chance to connect people with art in meaningful ways. When it comes to collaboration, you’ll be a natural, working proactively and confidently with multiple stakeholders and across teams.

You’ll bring:
  • At least 4-5 years’ experience in digital content or digital marketing role.
  • Proven experience managing websites (CMS) and supporting product-style approaches to digital platforms.
  • Experience delivering content strategies and managing editorial calendars and workflows.
  • Excellent written communication skills, with the ability to adapt tone for different audiences.
  • Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage competing priorities across projects.
  • Experience using SEO, search behaviour, optimising for AI Visibility and digital performance tools and insights to shape content.
  • Proven experience in eDM management, Salesforce Marketing Cloud would be helpful.
  • Strong skills in GA4 and digital reporting, with the ability to translate insights into actionable recommendations. Understanding Google Console, GTM and SEMRush would be a bonus.

You’ll be focused on supporting one of the country’s most significant cultural institutions – Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki. Working here means being part of a vibrant, passionate community of curators, artists, writers and art lovers, and gaining unique behind-the-scenes insights into exhibitions, collections, and the art world.

As a Digital Content Specialist, you’ll have the opportunity to grow your skills in digital platforms, content strategy, and analytics while helping shape nationally significant cultural experiences. You’ll be encouraged to bring fresh ideas, experiment with new tools, and develop your expertise through mentoring and collaboration.

The role sits within the Content & Channels team at Tātaki Auckland Unlimited - giving you access to a supportive group of creative colleagues and the scale of a wider organisation that delivers diverse cultural, sporting, and business events across Tāmaki Makaurau.

Working with us also means:
  • Flexible working arrangements to support work-life balance
  • Access to Auckland Council employee benefits and wellbeing initiatives
  • Staff offers for selected shows and events
  • Opportunities for mentoring and career development
