Job summary

New Zealand Health Group in Auckland seeks a Deaf VHN Specialist for a full-time maternity leave cover role. You will support Deaf clients with Very High Needs, delivering 1:1 and group activities, in community settings across Auckland and occasionally beyond.

The role requires fluent NZSL, strong communication, and collaboration with families while maintaining documentation. Standard hours are 8:00am–4:30pm, Monday to Friday, with some evening or weekend activities.

Qualifications

• Fluent NZSL essential.
• Experience supporting Deaf/ disability communities preferred.
• Ability to work with individuals with Very High/Complex Needs.
• Strong communication and organisational skills.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Responsibilities

Are you passionate about supporting Deaf people with disabilities to achieve their goals and live fulfilling lives? Explore is seeking a Deaf VHN Specialist to join our team in Auckland on a full-time permanent basis.

This is a unique opportunity to work closely with Deaf clients who have Very High Needs (VHN), supporting them through meaningful activities, community engagement, and personalised support.

This is a full-time permanent community-based role working primarily across Auckland, with some travel required outside the region.

You will support Deaf clients with Very High and Complex Needs, delivering both 1:1 support and group-based activities designed to help clients achieve their individual goals and aspirations.

The role involves supporting clients in a variety of environments including community programmes, activities, and daily living tasks. This may include providing personal care support when required.

You will also work collaboratively with families, whānau, and other service providers while maintaining accurate documentation and supporting programme delivery.

This role offers a balance of team-based work and independent client support, so strong time management and communication skills are essential.

Standard hours are Monday to Friday, 8:00am – 4:30pm, with occasional evening or weekend work depending on programme activities.

Fluent New Zealand Sign Language (NZSL) – essential

Strong knowledge and understanding of Deaf culture

Experience supporting people within the disability community

Confidence working with individuals who have complex or high needs

Ability to build positive relationships with clients and their whānau/families

Strong communication and organisational skills

Ability to work independently while contributing to a wider team

Full New Zealand driver’s licence

Legal right to work in New Zealand
