Job summary

Port of Auckland is seeking a Dayshift Mechanic to join our Engineering team to maintain the safety, reliability, and performance of critical port equipment. You will install, inspect, repair, and maintain mechanical systems, primarily straddle carriers, and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives.

You are a trade-qualified mechanic with strong diagnostic and root-cause analysis skills, a safety-first mindset, and the ability to work collaboratively in a busy port environment.

Qualifications

  • Trade certificate in heavy mechanical, diesel, automotive, or related field.
  • At least seven years’ relevant experience, including apprenticeship.
  • Experience with mechanical systems and plant maintenance.
  • Strong diagnostic and root-cause analysis capabilities.
  • Commitment to health and safety.

Responsibilities

  • Perform preventative maintenance, inspections, repairs, and fault-finding on straddle carriers and port equipment.
  • Install, inspect, repair, and maintain mechanical systems and plant.
  • Diagnose recurring faults and perform root-cause analysis to improve reliability.
  • Ensure work complies with technical, regulatory, and safety standards.
  • Collaborate with Engineering, Warehouse, and subcontractors to deliver services.
  • Identify improvements in maintenance practices and equipment.

Job description

We are looking for an experienced Dayshift Mechanic to join our Engineering team and help maintain the safety, reliability, and performance of critical port equipment.

You will install, inspect, repair, and maintain mechanical systems and plant, predominantly straddle carriers and associated equipment. From preventative maintenance and breakdown repairs to diagnosing recurring faults, your work will help keep our equipment operating safely, efficiently, and in line with approved technical standards.

Key Responsibilities
  • Carry out preventative maintenance, inspections, breakdown repairs, and fault-finding on straddle carriers and other port equipment.
  • Install, inspect, repair, and maintain mechanical systems and plant.
  • Diagnose recurring faults and complete root cause analysis to improve equipment reliability.
  • Ensure all work complies with approved technical, regulatory, and safety standards.
  • Provide a cost-effective and technically competent maintenance service.
  • Build technical knowledge across straddle carrier systems and other port machinery.
  • Identify and contribute to improvements in maintenance practices, equipment, and processes.
  • Work collaboratively with the Engineering team, Warehouse team, wider Port teams, and subcontractors.

You are a trade-qualified mechanic with strong diagnostic and root cause analysis skills. Safety-focused and technically capable, you enjoy solving mechanical problems, working collaboratively, and improving the reliability of heavy plant and equipment.

  • Trade certificate in heavy mechanical, diesel, automotive, or a related field.
  • At least seven years’ relevant experience, including apprenticeship.
  • Experience installing, inspecting, repairing, and maintaining mechanical systems and plant.
  • Strong diagnostic and root cause analysis capability.
  • Knowledge of preventative maintenance practices.
  • Strong commitment to health and safety.
  • Strong mechanical and technical capability.
  • Excellent diagnostic and problem-solving skills.
  • Commitment to safe working practices and quality outcomes.
  • Collaborative working style and willingness to share knowledge.
