Job summary

Natural Hazards Commission Toka Tū Ake is seeking an experienced Data Product Owner to lead development and enhancement of data products. The role focuses on translating business needs into concrete data solutions, ensuring quality, governance, and trust across data from insurers and partners.

About the role | Mō te mahi

We are looking for an experienced Data Product Owner to lead the ongoing development and improvement of NHC’s data products. You will work directly with data to understand problems, define practical solutions, validate outcomes, and improve the quality and usefulness of NHC’s data.

Reporting to the Head of Data Systems, you will connect business needs, partner challenges and strategic priorities with practical data solutions. You will shape product priorities, strengthen data quality and governance, and bring together business and technical expertise to resolve complex issues. Working closely with teams across NHC, insurers and other partners, you will help ensure our data is secure, trusted and fit for purpose.

Key responsibilities include:

• Manage and continuously improve NHC’s data products, including data supplied by insurers and other partners.
• Work directly with data throughout the lifecycle—from analysis and issue investigation through to documenting changes and enhancements, testing changes, and confirming data quality.
• Shape product roadmaps and priorities by translating business and partner needs into clear requirements and planned improvements.
• Bring together business and technical expertise to investigate and resolve complex data and technical issues.
• Lead initiatives that strengthen data quality, governance, stewardship and accountability.
• Build effective relationships with internal stakeholders, insurers, service providers and industry partners.
• Identify and progress responsible AI opportunities that improve data products, data quality and business outcomes.

To be successful in this role you will bring:

• Five or more years’ experience in a similar data-focused role.
• Experience translating business needs and partner challenges into clear requirements, priorities and measurable outcomes.
• Strong data product management skills, including roadmap development, backlog management, prioritisation and continuous improvement.
• Experience identifying and resolving complex data and technical issues.
• Demonstrated experience improving data quality and embedding effective governance and stewardship practices.
• Strong stakeholder and third-party relationship management skills, with the ability to build trust, influence decisions and negotiate priorities.
• Excellent communication and facilitation skills, including the ability to make technical information meaningful for different audiences.
