Job summary

Port Otago Group invites a Data Engineer to join the IT team in Port Chalmers (Dunedin) on a permanent, full-time basis. You will lead the Microsoft Fabric data platform, build data pipelines, and develop Power BI reports for trusted business insights.

You will collaborate with external consultants and MSPs, ensure governance and security, and contribute to continuous improvement within a small, collaborative IT team. A relevant qualification and Microsoft certifications are preferred.

Qualifications

• Minimum 5 years’ experience with Microsoft data warehousing and reporting tools.
• Experience implementing Microsoft best-practice frameworks including medallion architecture and metadata-driven frameworks.
• Strong Power BI skills: semantic models, DAX, row-level security, deployment pipelines.
• Working knowledge of data governance, security and access control in Microsoft 365/Azure.
• Experience collaborating with external consultants or MSPs to deliver technical programs.
• Excellent communication and ability to translate business needs into technical solutions.
• Ideally hold relevant tertiary qualification or equivalent and Microsoft certifications.
• Experience in port, logistics or similar complex operational industry.

Responsibilities

• Lead ongoing implementation, management and continuous improvement of the Microsoft Fabric data platform.
• Build and maintain data pipelines from core systems using Python, SQL, APIs and CI/CD.
• Develop, secure and deploy Power BI reports and semantic models for trusted insights.
• Migrate reporting into Fabric with internal users, MSPs and consultants.
• Identify opportunities to extend data capability with new sources and self-service reporting.
• Monitor data quality, pipeline reliability and maintain technical documentation.
