Job summary

Wellington City Council is seeking a Data and Information Governance Advisor to join our evolving Data and Information Governance team and help shape how Council manages data and information in a rapidly changing digital environment.

This role goes beyond traditional records management, helping kaimahi understand the value of good data management, navigate governance requirements and leverage technology to support decision making and service delivery.

Qualifications

  • Experience in data and information governance, information management or records management.
  • Strong Microsoft 365 knowledge, particularly SharePoint Online and information governance capabilities.
  • Understanding of Microsoft Purview incl. retention, classification, labelling and compliance.
  • Knowledge of legislation including the Public Records Act, Privacy Act and LGOIMA.
  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills, with ability to influence and support change.
  • Practical, curious and solutions-focused approach to problem solving and continuous improvement.

Responsibilities

  • Provide specialist advice on data and information governance, information management and records management.
  • Help develop and continuously improve Council’s data and information governance frameworks, standards, policies and practices.
  • Work with business groups to identify information risks, opportunities and practical improvements.
  • Use Microsoft 365, SharePoint Online and Microsoft Purview to support data and information lifecycle management, classification, retention and compliance.
  • Help Council understand and manage governance implications of emerging technologies, including AI.
  • Build relationships, provide guidance and education, and contribute to projects and continuous improvement that strengthen Council’s information capability.

You’llbe a trusted advisor across Council, turningdata andinformation governance requirements into practical solutions that support the work our teams are trying to achieve.

You’ll:

  • Providespecialist advice ondata andinformation governance, informationmanagementand records management.

We’relooking for someone who combines technical knowledge with strong people and relationship skills.

You’llhave experience indata andinformation governance, information management, records management, Microsoft 365 administration or a related field, with the ability to turn complex requirements into practical advice.

You’llideally bring:

  • Experience indataandinformation governance, information management or records management and a good understanding of information lifecycle management.
  • Strong Microsoft 365 knowledge, particularly SharePoint Online and information governance capabilities.
  • An understanding of Microsoft Purview, including retention, classification,labellingand compliance.
  • Knowledge of relevant legislation and regulatory requirements, including the Public Records Act, Privacy Act and LGOIMA.
  • Strong communicationand relationship-building skills, with the ability to influence and support change.
  • A practical,curiousand solutions-focused approach to problem solving and continuous improvement.

Experience with Microsoft Purview implementation, SharePoint Online PowerShell/PnP PowerShell, informationsecurityor AI governance would be an advantage.

A relevant qualification in information management, information systems, records management, library and information studies, technology or a related discipline is desirable. Equivalent practical experience will also be considered.
