Job description

Use your SQL, data analysis and modelling skills on a major data migration. Help redesign an enterprise data warehouse for a modern Databricks platform. Join a collaborative data and development team. Permanent, Wellington-based role. Help us modernise TEC's data platform.

The Tertiary Education Commission Te Amorangi Mātauranga Matua (TEC) is a small Crown agency with a big job. We help shape a tertiary education system that equips learners, communities and employers for success. We invest more than $3 billion each year across the tertiary education and careers systems. Our data supports investment decisions, funding, monitoring and reporting across TEC.

We are looking for a permanent Data Analyst with strong SQL, data warehouse analysis and data modelling skills. This role is well suited to an analyst who enjoys working with technical detail, complex data and data models.

About the Role

You will report to the Data Development Team Lead and join our Data and Development team. The team includes data analysts and data warehouse developers at intermediate, senior and principal levels.

You will initially work on a major data migration project. We are remodelling data from our existing SQL Server data warehouse for our Databricks-based Modern Data Platform.

You will analyse how data currently moves through the warehouse. You will document the data structures, transformations and business rules that the new solution must support.

You will translate high-level business requirements into detailed data requirements and technical documentation. Data warehouse developers will use your documentation to design and build the new solution.

Your work will include:
  • Analysing existing SQL Server data warehouse structures and processes.
  • Reading and reverse-engineering stored procedures, views and complex SQL queries.
  • Tracing data from source systems through to warehouse and reporting outputs.
  • Creating data flow diagrams, source-to-target mappings and entity relationship diagrams.
  • Documenting data definitions, transformation rules, dependencies and lineage.
  • Profiling data to identify missing values, inconsistencies and data quality issues.
  • Identifying undocumented business rules and validating them with subject matter experts.
  • Supporting logical and physical data modelling, including dimensional and star-schema models.
  • Defining expected data outcomes to support testing and reconciliation.
  • Working with business users, data architects, data warehouse developers, testers and reporting teams.

These responsibilities align with the intermediate level in the role description, including analysing source systems and warehouse structures, profiling data, documenting requirements and supporting data modelling.

What we are looking for:
  • Strong SQL skills, including the ability to understand complex queries, views and stored procedures.
  • Experience analysing or reverse-engineering existing data warehouse processes.
  • Experience translating high-level business requirements into detailed data requirements.
  • Practical experience creating data flow diagrams, source-to-target mappings and entity relationship diagrams.
  • Experience documenting data definitions, transformation rules, business rules and data lineage.
  • Experience profiling data and investigating missing, inconsistent or poor-quality data.
  • Knowledge of data warehouse modelling, including facts, dimensions and star schemas.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with close attention to detail.
  • Clear and well-structured written communication.
  • The ability to explain technical information to technical and non-technical people.
  • Experience working with business subject matter experts and technical delivery teams.

We will consider the quality and relevance of your experience alongside the number of years you have worked. Experience with migrations would help.

It would be useful if you also have:
  • Experience contributing to a data warehouse or data platform migration.
  • Experience with Azure or Databricks.
  • Experience using data modelling or diagramming tools.
  • Experience supporting data testing and reconciliation.
  • Python experience for data analysis or profiling.
  • Experience working in an Agile delivery environment.
  • Experience with all our technologies is not expected. A solid foundation in SQL-based analysis, data documentation and data modelling will help you succeed in the role.
What's in it for you
  • Three additional (TEC Days) leave days.
  • A range of benefits including flexible working options, a wellness programme and the ability to purchase extra leave.
  • A motivated and supportive manager, keen to make the most of your skill set.
  • Reduced premiums through our Health Insurance Group Scheme.
  • A focus on Career development and internal opportunities.
  • At TEC we are committed to supporting a range of flexible working arrangements to help staff manage their work and personal commitments, we also expect team members to be in the office at least three days per week to help collaboration.

The salary range for this position starts from $90,956 up to $107,007+ 3.5% KiwiSaver depending on demonstrable skills and experience.

The closing date for this role is Monday, 21 September 2026 at 11:59pm.
