Job summary

WorkSafe New Zealand is seeking a Data Engineer to design, build, and maintain data infrastructure and pipelines across the organisation. You will collaborate with the Data, Analytics and AI team to ensure reliable data for reporting and decision-making.

You will develop robust data processing, implement governance controls, and work with Azure Synapse and PySpark in a cloud environment to support secure data platforms.

Qualifications

  • Degree or diploma in IT is required.
  • Experience with data storage solutions (warehouses/data lakes) on cloud platforms.
  • Experience developing ETL/ELT processes for reliable data flow.

Responsibilities

  • Design, build and maintain data infrastructure, including pipelines and storage solutions.
  • Develop and optimise data pipelines for ETL/ELT to ensure efficient data processing.
  • Ensure data quality and integrity with validation, cleansing, and reconciliation processes.
  • Monitor and maintain data platforms for performance, reliability, and security.
  • Support data governance, security and access controls to protect sensitive information.

Enterprise Planning and Implementation is a new group established at WorkSafe to strengthen planning, coordination, and implementation across the organisation, particularly to improve how work is prioritised, sequenced, and supported through to delivery.

The Data, Analytics and AI team is at the heart of enabling data-driven decision-making across WorkSafe and is responsible for building and maintaining the data assets to meet WorkSafe’s data, insights and intelligence needs. Working closely with analysts, architects, engineers, and business stakeholders, the team develops the data foundations that support reporting, analytics, and organisational performance.

About the role / Ō te tūranga

As our Data Engineer you'll play a key role in designing, building, and maintaining the data infrastructure that powers our organisation. Working closely with our Digital Information and Services team, you'll develop and support robust data pipelines, storage solutions, and data platforms that ensure information is reliable, accessible, and secure. You'll apply your technical expertise to enable the efficient flow and management of data, supporting reporting, analytics, and operational decision‑making while helping to strengthen data quality, performance, and governance across the organisation.

What You'll Do/ Ko tōu ake mahi
  • Design, build and maintain data infrastructure, including pipelines and storage solutions, to support reliable, secure and accessible data across the organisation.
  • Develop and optimise data pipelines for extraction, transformation and loading (ETL/ELT) to ensure efficient, scalable and reliable data processing and flow.
  • Ensure data quality and integrity by implementation of validation, cleansing, reconciliation and error handling processes.
  • Monitor and maintain data platforms to ensure performance, reliability, scalability, and operational stability of data systems.
  • Support data governance, security and access controls to protect sensitive information and meet regulatory requirements.
What You'll Bring / Ko ngā pukenga ōu
  • Experience working with data storage solutions such as data warehouses and/or data lakes, including cloud-based platforms
  • Demonstrated experience developing and optimising ETL/ELT processes to support data availability, performance and reliability
  • Familiarity with government data standards, privacy frameworks and cloud platforms
  • Proficiency with data modelling and database management
  • A commitment to public service and ethical data use
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills in cross functional teams
  • Degree in computer science or a related field and extensive comparable knowledge and experience gained in a similar role
  • Experience with Azure Synapse & Pyspark preferred
Salary range / Awhe utu

As part of our remuneration framework, the full annual salary range is $103,059-$135,004(KiwiSaver/SSRSS employer contributions are additional). From 1 April 2026 our KiwiSaver employer contribution increased to 3.5%.
