Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora - Waikato is seeking a Specialist Gastroenterologist on a part-time contract (0.6–1.0 FTE) based at Waikato Hospital in Hamilton. The role involves clinics, endoscopy, ward duties and on-call responsibilities, with opportunities for teaching and research.

We welcome subspecialty interest in hepatology alongside general gastroenterology. The salary aligns with the ASMS SECA framework and includes KiwiSaver, shift allowances, professional development and wellness

We are looking for a Specialist Gastroenterologist to join our highly skilled, multidisciplinary team at Waikato Hospital; the largest gastroenterology service in the Central North Island, offering advanced procedures, specialist clinics, and opportunities for research and teaching.

About the Role

In this role, youll be an integral part of our departments daily operations, contributing to clinics, endoscopy, and ward duties, along with participating in the on-call roster.

Beyond the clinical work, theres a real opportunity to shape the futurethrough teaching, ongoing medical education, and quality improvement initiatives.

Were particularly keen to hear from those with a subspecialty interest in hepatology, as well as general gastroenterology. Specialty roles would involve dedicated liver clinics, CNS support and support for the HCC MDT meeting, alongside general gastroenterology and endoscopy commitments.

The salary for this position will be based on experience and in line with the ASMS SECA agreement.

About the Team/Service

Our team consists of 7 permanent Gastroenterologists, Specialists Nurses in Hepatology and Inflammatory Bowel Disease and a Nurse Endoscopist. We have two advanced trainees and one fellow as part of the national training scheme.

We offer comprehensive Gastroenterology services at Waikato, including:

• Acute inpatient service for hepatology and IBD patients
• Specialist hepatology and IBD clinics (including Fibroscan and intestinal ultrasound)
• General gastroenterology clinics
• Clinical trial unit and opportunities for investigator led research
• Contributions to medical student, physician and gastroenterology training pathways

We are the largest service in the Central North Island and provide support and tertiary services for surrounding hospitals.
