  • Influence quality, consistency, and compliance while contributing to training, auditing, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Apply your commercial building consent experience (Competency COM1-3) in a role that combines technical expertise with people development.

We're looking for an experienced building professional to join our Assessment Team within the Capability Unit and play a key role in shaping the capability, consistency, and technical excellence of Auckland Council's technical building control staff.

Reporting to the Team Leader - Assessment, you'll assess competency, undertake technical audits, provide coaching and mentoring, and support the ongoing development of Building Consent Authority staff. Through your work, you'll help strengthen technical capability, promote consistent decision-making, and support compliance with legislative and accreditation requirements.

This is an opportunity to take the next step in your career, combining your technical expertise with coaching, mentoring, and assessment to develop the next generation of building professionals and help drive better building outcomes across the industry.

Day-to-day, you will:

  • Perform technical assessments of staff against the National Competency Assessment Framework (NCAS) under Building Regs. 10 & 11.
  • Conduct technical audits under Building Reg. 17.
  • Analyse audit and competency outcomes to identify training needs and develop plans.
  • Collaborate with operational teams to develop and deliver training ensuring compliance with both BCA accreditation and the Building Act.
  • And other opportunities as they arise such as continuous improvements, writing / editing policies, participating in IANZ accreditation activities etc.

You bring substantial experience in building related regulatory services, gained through commercial building inspections or plan processing. You possess strong process orientation, complemented by sound judgment and decision making skills that support continuous business improvement. You are resilient, adaptable, and able to perform effectively in dynamic environments, demonstrating calm and solutions-focused decision making in complex situations.

You have excellent interpersonal skills, enabling you to build effective relationships with a variety of stakeholders. Your computer literacy allows you to produce clear and accurate reports, monitor and review statistical data, and conduct research with precision. Ideally, you have already been assessed for Appendix 2 under the National Competency Assessment Framework (NCAS).

We are seeking individuals with the appropriate combination of experience and qualifications. If you hold a current Com 1–3 Building competency, possess advanced knowledge of the New Zealand Building Code and Building Act, and have achieved NZ Level 6 or higher, this role provides an excellent opportunity to apply your expertise and contribute to the development and capability of our team.

What we are looking for:

  • Strong training, communication, presentation, and facilitation skills.
  • Experience coaching, mentoring, and developing staff in Building Consents technical functions.
  • Highly developed analytical skills with the ability to carry out technical audits to prescribed standards.
  • A qualification recognised by Regulation 18 of the Building Regulations 2006 (Accreditation of Building Consent Authority).
  • A minimum of five years’ experience in building inspections and consenting, or at least three years’ experience assessing the competency of technical staff.

At Auckland Council, you will join a dynamic, supportive environment where your mahi (work) will directly impact the lives of over 1.7 million Aucklanders. We offer flexible working conditions, a focus on well-being, and a culture of continuous improvement.
