Job description

Casual LibraryPlus/Customer Support Officer
South Taranaki District Council

More Than Books - Be the Heart of Our Community!
Showcase the modern library experience where technology, people, and ideas come together.

Are you: Are you cheerful, pleasant and passionate about helping people and creating exceptional customer experiences?

Do you: Do you thrive on connecting with people of all ages, from teens to seniors?

If so, here's your opportunity!

South Taranaki District Council is looking for a customer-focused and community-minded casual on call employee to join our Te Ramanui o Ruapūtahanga team in a unique role combining LibraryPlus, i-SITE Visitor Information Centre, AA Agency and Council customer services. This is a fantastic opportunity for someone who enjoys working with people, thrives in a busy environment, and takes pride in delivering outstanding service to every customer, every time.

About our District - Our mission is to make our communities better, and this role contributes directly to that goal. Located in a beautiful part of New Zealand, our district offers an enviable lifestyle with affordable housing, easy access to outdoor recreation, and convenient proximity to larger centres.

About our Organisation - At South Taranaki District Council, we are a progressive and values-driven organisation committed to delivering excellent services to our communities. We offer a supportive workplace culture, flexible working opportunities, a sick leave bank, a retention incentive after five years' service, and a strong commitment to professional development.

About the Role - This position is offered on a casual basis, with no guaranteed minimum number of hours per week. You will need to be available to work from three to eight hours per day, as required, sometimes at short notice and occasionally on a Saturday morning. As some travel is involved, a current driver licence is essential.

This is a varied and rewarding position where no two days are the same. You will be the friendly face welcoming residents and visitors, providing information about Council services, supporting library users, assisting with AA and NZTA transactions, promoting local attractions and events, and helping customers access a wide range of community services.

Responsibilities include providing accurate information, processing transactions, maintaining records, managing bookings, supporting library operations and digital services, promoting community and visitor services, and undertaking cash handling. As modern libraries offer far more than books, we are looking for someone who is adaptable, technology-confident, eager to learn, and comfortable engaging with people of all ages.

About You - You are a friendly, customer-focused professional who enjoys working with people and providing exceptional service. With strong communication and interpersonal skills, you build positive relationships, respond to enquiries confidently, and help customers access a wide range of services.

You are organised, adaptable, and able to manage multiple tasks in a busy environment while maintaining accuracy and attention to detail. Confident using technology and administrative systems, you enjoy being part of a team and take pride in creating welcoming experiences that support and connect the community.

Applications close at 4pm on Tuesday, 29 September 2026 or when a suitable candidate has been appointed to the role.
