About The Role

We are seeking a Senior Embedded Build Engineer to own the automated build, test, and release ecosystems for our customized Embedded Linux platforms. In this role, you will bridge the gap between embedded firmware engineering and automated infrastructure.

You will play a critical role in managing our Yocto platform distributions, architecting advanced multi-platform pipelines using both GitLab CI and GitHub Actions, and establishing deterministic environments that turn hardware-level builds into highly scalable software operations.

You will work on creating C++ Embedded Linux and Windows builds with an embedded focus, integrating various C++ packages into a build, creating and maintaining a CI/CD pipeline, generating build packages and installers, integrated with automated regression testing and ensuring we are applying state of the art tooling in its implementation with a view for continuous improvement.

You will be responsible for defining, building and maintaining frameworks and infrastructure that help with build packaging for multi-platform environments (Windows, Linux, Cloud) and understand the cloud requirements in packaging for remote deployment to remote customer locations. You will leverage tooling such New Relic, Snowflake, Power BI to effectively monitor and report on infrastructure and embedded device metrics. You will also collaborate with other engineers and stakeholders to ensure the quality and reliability of our software products and the build infrastructure and solutions.

Responsibilities

• Yocto Distribution & BSP Automation: Develop, maintain, optimize, and scale automated build pipelines for custom Embedded Linux distributions using the Yocto Project (Bit Bake). Maintain custom metadata layers and optimize build caching strategies.
• Hybrid CI/CD Pipeline Architecture: Design, build, and optimize complex workflows utilizing both GitLab CI and GitHub Actions.
• Build Infrastructure Scaling: Manage containerized build agents (Docker) and provision distributed infrastructure to support resource-heavy Yocto compilations.
• Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) Integration: Connect automated pipelines to physical target boards or emulated execution environments to enable seamless automated testing.
• Artifact & Release Management: Manage versioning and generation of reproducible Yocto build artifacts, SDKs, root filesystems, system packages, including binary signing, secure storage, and distribution.
• Security & Vulnerability Tracking: Implement automated security scanning directly into the build pipeline, utilizing Yocto CVE checking tools and securing code-signing keys for secure boot workflows.
• Development of Linux-based scripts and images for use in embedded systems
• Story definition and execution in an Agile environment
• Source code and system-level backups and continuity management
• Design, develop and maintain build systems and tools for C++ projects with Embedded Linux and Windows as target platforms and unit test builds for x86.
• Integrate various C++ packages and dependencies into a coherent build following best practices for Linux and Windows packaging
• Create and manage CI/CD pipelines for integration with automated testing, deployment and delivery
• Implement and improve automated regression testing frameworks and scripts
• Research and adopt state of the art tools and technologies for build, DevOps and integration
• Troubleshoot and resolve build, infrastructure and integration issues
• Ensure compliance with coding standards, best practices and security policies
• Collaborate with other engineers and stakeholders to provide feedback, suggestions for improvement, training and mentoring, and promote knowledge sharing and learning opportunities

Required Skills & Qualifications

• Tertiary qualification in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field
• Expertise in Linux environment, shell scripting, administration, tools, and build systems
• Proficient in C, C++, GCC toolchain usage and creation, CMake, Makefiles, static and dynamic linking knowledge
• 7+ years of experience in Linux Administration, Embedded build systems, DevOps
• Yocto Project Mastery: Deep, production-level experience writing and maintaining Yocto recipes, configuration files, and custom layers. Solid understanding of the BitBake build engine.
• CI/CD Expertise: Hands-on mastery of GitLab CI (including advanced YAML configurations, parent-child pipelines) and GitHub Actions (including self-hosted runners and custom actions).
• Core Linux Systems: Strong proficiency in Linux system administration, bootloaders (e.g., U-Boot), and partition layouts.
• Containerisation: Expert-level experience using Docker to ensure reproducible, isolated host environments for Yocto builds.
• Programming: Proficiency in Python and Bash for writing robust automation and tooling scripts.
• Experience in packaging and distributing software products using tools such as RPM, Deb, etc.

Desired Qualifications

• Experience setting up and tuning Yocto mirror infrastructure (PR service, shared state caches) to minimise build cycle times.
• Experience with automated testing frameworks for embedded systems (e.g., Pytest).
• Understanding of open-source software integration and licensing considerations
• Experience in the payments industry
• Experience in automated testing frameworks and tools such as Google Test, CTest, Cucumber, etc.
• Knowledge of cloud platforms and technologies such as AWS, Azure, etc.

Experience in observability & reporting tooling such as New Relic, Snowflake and Power BI
