Job summary

HR Mechanical Services Ltd is seeking a qualified tradesperson to join our Upper Hutt workshop to overhaul brake and pneumatic components for Wellington's Matangi trains. You will pull apart, repair, test and rebuild safety-critical brake systems, performing hands-on trade work rather than desk tasks.

We value pride in workmanship, reading mechanical drawings, and experience with pneumatic systems. A trade certificate in mechanical engineering or fitting is required; forklift licence and rail

Qualifications

• Trade certificate in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.
• Experience with pneumatic systems, valves and compressed air equipment.
• Experience overhauling or maintaining brake systems; rail experience is a plus.
• Able to read and interpret mechanical drawings.
• Hands-on, precise with safety and quality.

Responsibilities

• Overhauling, repairing, and testing brake actuators, compressors, and pneumatic components.
• Bench testing and fault finding on brake and pneumatic systems.
• Checking parts for reuse and replacement per specs.
• Carrying out leak, force, and function tests to spec.
• Keeping accurate job records and service documentation.
• Maintaining a clean, safe, and organised work area.

What You'll Be Doing

• Overhauling, repairing, and testing brake actuators, compressors, and pneumatic components
• Bench testing and fault finding on brake and pneumatic systems
• Checking parts to see what can be reused and what needs replacing
• Carrying out leak, force, and function tests to spec
• Keeping accurate job records and service documentation
• Keeping your work area clean, safe, and organised

What You'll Need

• Trade Certificate in Mechanical Engineering, Fitting and Machining, or similar
• Experience with pneumatic systems, valves, and compressed air equipment
• Experience overhauling or maintaining brake systems (rail experience an advantage)
• Comfortable reading mechanical drawings and pneumatic circuits
• Good hands for stripping down and rebuilding precision componentsCan follow written instructions and procedures without needing to be chased

Nice to have:

• Forklift licence
• Experience with continuous improvement
