You’ll be pulling apart, repairing, testing, and rebuilding safety‑critical bogie systems to a high standard — hands‑on trade work, not a desk job.
The Mechanical Technician (Railway / Bogie Maintenance) performs maintenance support tasks on railway bogies and associated mechanical systems. This role supports the reliability, safety, and performance of rolling stock by assisting with inspections, testing, disassembly, cleaning, and reassembly of bogie assemblies. The technician supports Mechanical Engineers through data collection, basic analysis, and quality assurance activities, contributing to the continuous improvement of railway maintenance standards.
Assisting in conducting routine tests of mechanical systems and components to evaluate performance and record data.
Support the overhaul, cleaning, and servicing of traction motors and running gear
Assists with the maintenance of wheelsets, driving gear, and suspension systems
Disassemble, clean, and reassemble bogie frames using standard mechanical fitting techniques under guidance
Carry out routine cleaning, rust removal, and surface preparation of bogie parts prior to senior inspection
Collect and log data from mechanical inspections and tests to assist engineers in fault diagnosis
Assist in quality control checks to ensure components meet required engineering specifications
Install, adjust, and align parts or assemblies as directed by senior team members
Adhere to workplace health, safety, and environmental regulations during all workshop activities
Hours : Full-time (40 hours/week), with working hours beginning at 8:00 AM.
Qualification: A relevant engineering or trade qualification at NZQA Level 4 or above is required
Experience: Experience in mechanical trade, heavy industry or similar will be considered
Understanding of mechanical systems, disassembly, and assembly
Ability to follow written instructions, maintenance manuals, and safety protocols
Good attention to detail and ability to work productively within a team environment
Comfortable reading mechanical drawings and assembly schematics
Forklift licence
Experience with continuous improvement
