Job description

About Asteron Life

Asteron Life has been supporting New Zealanders for nearly 150 years. We are here to help customers build bright futures and protect what matters most. We offer a range of personal, business and employee insurance products that can help our customers through just about anything life throws at you. We work with our financial advisers, who provide expert insurance advice and match the right insurance needs to help our customers live life to the fullest, and our strategic partners who provide tools and information so customers can assess their needs and find the cover that's best suited to them. We value diverse backgrounds and perspectives, foster an inclusive, collaborative and flexible working environment, that will support your professional growth and reward your contribution.

Role

Asteron is looking for a talented actuarial professional to join our team as a Valuation Actuary. You will work as part of the Valuation team, focusing primarily on financial reporting, while also contributing across the breadth of the actuarial function. This is a hands-on, varied role for someone who enjoys solving problems, bringing clarity to complex data, and helping strengthen our processes and controls. It's a great time to join. The actuarial function is growing, we're modernising our processes, and you'll have visibility across major reporting cycles, regulatory deliverables and business planning, working closely with the broader actuarial team, Finance and business leaders.

Key Responsibilities
  • Valuation and reporting - preparing regular actuarial and financial reporting, valuation controls, model monitoring and assumption reviews to a high standard of accuracy.
  • Risk and insight - identifying and assessing risks that affect insurance liabilities, capital and profitability, and formulating actuarial advice based on analysis and knowledge of the business.
  • Continuous improvement - contributing to improvements in systems, controls and reporting processes, with a strong focus on accuracy, efficiency and automation.
  • Providing guidance, support and mentorship for more junior members of the actuarial team.
  • Supporting Capital and Reinsurance functions as required.
  • Stakeholder engagement - building effective relationships across the business and clearly explaining complex concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Contribute to the actuarial function and broader Asteron team, including supporting and leading key actuarial projects as required.
What you bring
  • Progress towards actuarial qualification (Actuaries Institute of Australia, NZ Society of Actuaries, or equivalent), part-qualified through to nearly/newly qualified level.
  • Other relevant expertise and experience will be considered.
  • Experience in life insurance or financial services, with sound valuation, reporting and actuarial judgement.
  • Knowledge of New Zealand insurance regulation and IFRS17/IFRS reporting, and experience using Prophet or similar actuarial software.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, and the ability to work with complex data.
  • A collaborative, proactive style - someone who can balance pace and accuracy, manage deadlines, and work well with a range of stakeholders.
  • A fast learner and self-starter - someone who is not afraid of being thrown into the deep end, keen to learn new ways of doing things and takes accountability seriously.
  • Exposure to capital, solvency or reinsurance work is an advantage.
Why Join Us?
  • Career pathways, including local and global mobility opportunities.
  • Leading Learning Platforms and support in professional development.
  • Medical Plan and Wellbeing Programs.
  • Life, Income Protection and Trauma Cover.

Accessibility and Checks Before commencing employment in this role, you will need to provide two references, full working rights and complete police and credit checks through an online provider.

As an equal opportunity employer strongly committed to working in a diverse and inclusive workforce you will be provided with any support or accessibility requirements throughout your interview process.
