Qualifications

Staff Officer (2030 Digitalisation - Artificial Intelligence Engineer)

The Joint Warfare Centre (JWC) in Stavanger, Norway is building a Data Science Team and seeks a Staff Officer (2030 Digitalisation – Artificial Intelligence Engineer) to lead the transformation of JWC’s exercises through cutting‑edge AI technologies. The role involves designing and deploying large language model (LLM) solutions, coordinating cross‑domain projects, and embedding AI into JWC’s operational processes.

Principal Duties

• Provide subject‑matter‑expert advice and manage the development, refinement and delivery of LLM AI tools for JWC’s digital transformation program
• Highlight emerging technologies and opportunities to enhance machine‑learning‑enabled process improvement
• Deploy, optimise and manage LLM‑powered applications in a production environment
• Fine‑tune existing pre‑trained LLMs to fit future JWC applications
• Develop multimodal solutions for hybrid search
• Develop a roadmap for integrating data initiatives and digital transformation into JWC’s processes and exercise production
• Apply validation methodologies to verify the accuracy and reliability of large data‑centric programmes, e.g. Geographic Intelligence
• Recommend, coordinate and initiate projects embedding AI solutions into JWC business processes
• Collaborate with stakeholders, internal teams and working groups as needed
• Provide expert advice on automation to JWC leadership and staff
• Stay abreast of industry trends and best practices in AI systems to enhance analytical processes and tools at JWC NATO

Education/Training (Essential)

• University degree in information technology, economics, statistics, operations research or related discipline and three years of related functional experience
• OR higher secondary education with advanced vocational training leading to a professional qualification and four years of related experience

Experience (Essential)

• At least three years of functional experience developing, managing and adapting AI systems, including LLMs
• At least two years of functional experience with Python, SQL and Spark or equivalent
• Certification in Microsoft Azure Data Scientist or equivalent

Language (Essential)

• English – Upper Intermediate/Advanced

Professional Experience (Desirable)

• Problem‑solving skills: strong analytical and critical thinking to identify patterns, trends and outliers in data and solve complex business problems using data‑driven approaches
• Knowledge of and experience in programming, machine learning, data management, big data technology, ethical data considerations and project management

Education/Training (Desirable)

• Master’s degree or equivalent in artificial intelligence systems, computational science or related discipline
• A recognised project‑management qualification (APM, Prince, AgilePM, etc.)

Work Environment

The work is normally performed in an office environment. Oral and written work in this post and across the headquarters is conducted mainly in English. Travel to temporary duty may be required for conferences and irregular working hours may be required, especially during exercises/events.

Contract

This project post is limited to a definite duration of three years with no guarantee of continuation beyond that period. Successful applicants will be offered a three‑year definite‑duration employment contract in accordance with NATO Civilian Personnel Regulations.

Salary

Starting basic salary is NOK 93,933.00 per month (tax‑free). Additional allowances may apply depending on personal circumstances.
