Job description

UiB - Knowledge that shapes society

UiB shall be among Europe's leading universities, internationally recognized for high quality in research and education. As a societal institution, we shall contribute to sustainable and democratic development and be an attractive and inclusive place to study and work.

Researcher within applied mathematics and computationalscience for geological porous materials

At the Department of Mathematics, in the Porous Media Research Group, there is a vacancy for a permanent Researcher 1109 position in applied mathematics and computational science.

For the period 2027-2031, the position is primarily funded by the Norwegian Research Council funded centers “Center for Sustainable Subsurface Resources” (CSSR), and “gigaCCS”, in which the University of Bergen is a partner. However, permanent researchers are encouraged to be engaged in securing their own funding, and in the long term, the position may be funded by a combination of projects within the research group.

About the project/work tasks

The successful candidate will be instrumental in the group’s activity within both mentioned centers. Key work tasks and responsibilities will involve:

  • Development and mathematical analysis of solver technology for multiphase flow simulation in deformable geological porous media. Key challenges and opportunities related to the center applications include:
    • a) Operations with intermittent and/or cyclical injection profiles.
    • b) CO2 storage with varying degrees of impurities in both the CO2 and the reservoir fluid(s).
    • c) large-scale, multi-field operations with non-negligible mechanical response.
  • Supervision of PhD and MSc students with thesis topics that are relevant for the ongoing research, both as co-supervisor or main supervisor.
  • Support in the integration of centers activities, including taking part in the development of annual working plans and reporting.
  • Contribute to outreach and communication activities, both towards society as well as industry partners
Qualifications and personal qualities
  • Applicants must hold a degree equivalent to a Norwegian doctoral degree (PhD) within computational and applied mathematics, or have a PhD in a closely related field (e.g. computational physics, civil and environmental engineering, computer science), and demonstrate equivalent competence within computational and applied mathematics. Candidates that have submitted his/her doctoral thesis for assessment prior to the application deadline will also be considered. It is a condition of employment that the PhD has been awarded.
  • Research-level experience with numerical analysis and partial differential equations is a requirement.
  • Research-level experience with development of simulation technology is a requirement.
  • Research-level experience with either multiphase flow in porous media, or geomechanics, is a requirement.
  • Experience with either CO2 storage or petroleum engineering is an advantage.
  • Experience with open science and FAIR research practices is an advantage.
  • Experience from supervision of students is an advantage.
  • Ability to attract external research funding is an advantage.
  • Applicants must be able to work independently and in a structured manner and have the ability to cooperate with others.
  • Applicants must have excellent skills in oral and written English.
  • Fluency in a Scandinavian language is an advantage. All our staff is given the opportunity to attend courses in order to learn Norwegian and we expect them to learn Norwegian or another Scandinavian language within three years.

In assessing the candidates, a review of both the quality and the breadth of the candidate's research will be conducted. Personal and relational qualities will be emphasized.

Special requirements for the position

The University of Bergen is subjected to the regulation for export control system. The regulation will be applied in the processing of the applications.

The position is subject to the following terms
  • The researcher will be a member of the research group in which the subject area of the position belongs.
  • As a general rule, the researcher’s salary, operating costs, and research activities must be fully funded through external grants and projects.
  • The researcher is expected to actively contribute to securing external research funding for both their own activities and those of the broader research environment. Research activities are to be funded by the projects the researcher and the research group, are working on. Major funding sources include the Research Council of Norway and the European Union, among others.
  • The Head of Department may assign the researcher to work on specific research projects.
  • The researcher may undertake administrative duties and serve on committees and other bodies within the University of Bergen (UiB).
  • The position does not include teaching responsibilities. However, the successful candidate is expected to contribute to the supervision of master's and PhD students where this is a natural part of the research group's activities.
  • If the external funding that supports the position ceases, the basis for the position will no longer exist, which may result in termination of employment. In such cases, the applicable legislation governing the employment and preferential rights of government employees will apply.
We can offer
  • Exciting development opportunities as part of your role in a strong professional environment
  • Position as researcher (code 1109 in the basic collective agreement) and a gross annual salary of NOK 685 900 – 725 000,- upon appointment. Further increases in salary are made according to length of service in the position. A higher salary may be considered for a particularly well-qualified applicant.
  • Enrolment in the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund
  • Good welfare benefit

Researchers code 1109 holding a permanent position, may apply for a personal promotion to Researcher code 1183 based on a declaration of competence. For more information, see Personal promotion to Researcher code 1183 | Faculty of Science and Technology
