Job description

UiB - Knowledge that shapes society

UiB shall be among Europe's leading universities, internationally recognized for high quality in research and education. As a societal institution, we shall contribute to sustainable and democratic development and be an attractive and inclusive place to study and work.

Postdoctoral Research Fellow position within Physics-Informed Machine Learning for Offshore Wind

At the Department of Mathematics, there is a vacancy for a postdoctoral research fellow position within Physics-informed Machine Learning for offshore wind.

The position is for a fixed term of 3 years and is associated with a recently granted Horizon Europe project where the University of Bergen is a partner.

About the project/work tasks

The project joins the forces of a consortium consisting of 9 partners from 6 different countries in the EU/EEA. It aims to provide timely and feasible solutions for offshore wind turbines, enabling to enhance their structural awareness, real-time reliability assessment, and predictive maintenance decision support through integrated sensing, modelling, and digital frameworks.

Exceptional opportunities are offered, including collaborating with leading experts in offshore wind, participating in international conferences and project meetings, and engagement in an interdisciplinary research environment. The position will expect research visits and joint activities as required and financially supported by the project. Expected starting date is January 1, 2027.

Your overall focus will be to strengthen the link between basic and applied research, a strategy of the MEGA research group led by Associate Professor Yan Li. Your primary roles include:

  • Develop new and review data-driven surrogate models for real-time reconstruction and forward simulations.
  • Create numerical algorithms for physics reconstruction using sparse data.
  • Implement assimilation pipelines which integrate physics and surrogate models
  • Collaborate with project teams and participate in project activities
  • Produce project deliverables
Qualifications and personal qualities
  • Applicants must hold a degree equivalent to a Norwegian doctoral degree (PhD) within Marine engineering, applied mechanics, physics, computer science or similar fields; or must have submitted his/her doctoral thesis for assessment prior to the application deadline. It is a condition of employment that the PhD has been awarded.
  • Documented high-quality journal papers on relevant topics are required.
  • Documented experience with roles-related research activities is an advantage.
  • Previous research with a strong interdisciplinary focus is an advantage.
  • Applicants must be able to work independently and in a structured manner, and have the ability to cooperate with others.
  • Applicants must have good written and oral English skills.

Personal and relational qualities will be emphasized. Research experience, ambitions and potential will also count when evaluating the candidates.

Special requirements for the position

The University of Bergen is subjected to the regulation for export control system. The regulation will be applied in the processing of the applications.

We can offer
  • Exciting development opportunities as part of your role in a strong professional environment
  • Salary as a postdoctoral research fellow (code 1352) in the state salary scale. This currently amounts to an annual salary of NOK 685 900 before taxes. Further salary increases are made according to the length of service in the position.
