Under general supervision and in accordance with defined policies and procedures, the Patient Access Specialist performs scheduling functions for services offered by Dorminy Medical Center in an outpatient setting. This position is responsible for the pre-admission, admission, and registration of patients entering Dorminy Medical Center in a courteous and professional manner. The Patient Access Specialist interviews patients and gathers complete and accurate information to complete the admission and registration process accurately, efficiently, and expeditiously. This position is also responsible for pre-census, final census, and registration of inpatients, Same Day Surgery patients, outpatients, and Emergency Room patients. The Patient Access Specialist obtains appropriate signatures and informs patients and guests of DMC regulations, policies, and services.
Essential Job Functions
- Operates the computer and phone systems to accurately schedule, change, cancel, coordinate, and confirm appointments, including ancillary tests and procedures for patients and customers.
- Verifies and updates patients' insurance and demographic information.
- Verifies and updates insurance cards, eligibility information, and other billing-related documents, and scans them into the system.
- Follows regulatory and organizational processes to ensure the patient has completed necessary forms to be compliant with payor and regulatory requirements.
- Verifies insurance benefits and coverage information and performs advance price and out-of-pocket estimates to respond to patient inquiries and meet department point-of-service expectations.
- Prepares and completes patient documents, including obtaining patient signatures on required forms and consents, to support timely and accurate billing.
- Enter appointment information as needed to facilitate registration at front desk.
- Determines and communicates patient financial responsibility and collects personal amounts due in advance of planned services, to maximize the patient experience and meet department point of service (POS) goals.
- Assist patients with information regarding Financial Assistance, the Patient Bill of Rights, and the Notice of Privacy Practices, ensuring compliance with payor and regulatory requirements.
- Attains productivity benchmarks and department standards, including but not limited to point of service collections and insurance eligibility to warrant timely payments and accurate claims.
- Operates fax machine, photocopier and/or printer effectively to communicate patient information.
- Identifies and resolves problems in a professional and timely manner by collecting and relaying information to the appropriate team or department to ensure resolution.
- Reviews and meets ongoing competency requirements of the role to maintain the skills, knowledge, and abilities to perform, within scope, role specific functions.
- Regular attendance is required to carry out the essential functions of this position.
Job Requirements
Certification and completion of Patient Access Specialist Certification courses through DMC within first 90 days of employment.
Experience: Prefer healthcare office experience or position involved with meeting public. Ability to read and communicate effectively in English; Spanish also preferred.
- Ability to think and work effectively under stress with frequent interruptions; to move, sit, stand, walk and bend intermittently throughout the workday, lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
- Must possess sight and hearing senses or use prosthetics that will enable these sources to function adequately so that the requirements of this position can be fully met.
- Use of mechanical and technical equipment required for the responsibilities assigned.

Experience High School Diploma or GED. Type 35 wpm.
