Job description

We're seeking an engineer who loves getting close to the hardware to build the brains for our global sensor network.

Must haves
  • Proven experience in embedded systems development using C/C++.
  • Strong understanding of low-level hardware interfaces and communication protocols (e.g., I2C, SPI, UART).
  • Solid debugging skills for hardware and firmware issues, using tools like logic analyzers and oscilloscopes.
  • Foundational knowledge of electronics and the ability to read schematics.
  • Eligible to work in Norway (must hold relevant work authorization or citizenship).
  • For recent graduates: A relevant academic background (e.g., Cybernetics, Electronics, Computer Science) and a portfolio showcasing personal projects in firmware or embedded systems.
Nice to haves
  • A proactive mindset, comfortable taking ownership from concept to deployment.
  • You thrive in a fast-paced environment and embrace using modern tools, including AI, to enhance your workflow.
  • An innate curiosity for how things work and a passion for building robust, efficient systems.
  • A collaborative spirit, eager to work closely with hardware and cloud software teams.
  • You are motivated by seeing your work have a tangible, real-world impact.
About the job

Write the code that powers a smarter global supply chain.

We're expanding our firmware team and looking for a motivated Firmware Engineer. You will be instrumental in developing the core logic for our next-generation container sensors, which are cutting-edge IoT devices designed to track containers worldwide using cellular and satellite communication. These incredibly low-power devices operate for over 12 years on primary cell batteries, requiring no charging or service – making them truly unattended in the field. You'll be working in a fast-paced environment where you'll have significant ownership over your projects. This is a chance to build tangible products that have a real-world impact on global logistics.

Design, develop, and maintain firmware for our low-power, long-life embedded IoT devices.

Optimize firmware for ultra-low power consumption to meet our industry-leading battery life targets.

Collaborate directly with hardware engineers on board bring-up, validation, and debugging.

Develop and maintain robust test suites and automated testing infrastructure for firmware validation.

Troubleshoot and resolve complex issues that span the hardware, firmware, and cloud interface.

What You'll Be Building

From Code to Container

As a Firmware Engineer at Balder, you're not just writing code; you're creating the intelligence that powers our global network of smart containers. You will be a key player in a small, agile team responsible for the entire firmware lifecycle, from initial concept and architecture to deployment and in-field updates. You will work on optimizing for our industry-leading battery life, developing robust communication protocols, and ensuring our sensors perform reliably in the harshest conditions. Your work will directly contribute to making global trade more efficient, transparent, and sustainable.

How We Build
High Ownership

We believe in empowering our engineers. You'll own projects end-to-end, making key technical decisions that shape our products.

AI-Augmented Workflow

We leverage cutting-edge AI tools to streamline development, debug faster, and focus on solving the most challenging problems.

Hardware & Software Synergy

Our teams work in tight collaboration. You'll be side-by-side with hardware and cloud engineers, ensuring seamless integration.

Global Scale

The firmware you write will be deployed on devices across the planet, providing critical data for global supply chains.
