Job summary

Balder is expanding its firmware team and seeks a motivated Firmware Engineer to develop the core logic for our next-generation container sensors. These ultra-low-power IoT devices track containers worldwide using cellular and satellite links, designed for years of unattended operation.

You will own firmware from concept to deployment, work with hardware and cloud engineers, and help push for best-in-class battery life and reliability.

Qualifications

  • Proven experience in embedded systems development using C/C++.
  • Strong understanding of low-level hardware interfaces and protocols (I2C, SPI, UART).
  • Solid debugging skills for hardware and firmware issues, using tools like logic analyzers and oscilloscopes.
  • Foundational knowledge of electronics and the ability to read schematics.
  • Eligible to work in Norway with valid work authorization or citizenship.
  • For graduates: a relevant academic background (Cybernetics, Electronics, CS) and a firmware portfolio.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and maintain firmware for low-power embedded IoT devices.
  • Optimize firmware for ultra-low power consumption to extend battery life.
  • Collaborate with hardware engineers on board bring-up, validation, and debugging.
  • Develop and maintain robust test suites and automated firmware validation.
  • Troubleshoot complex issues spanning hardware, firmware, and cloud interfaces.

About the job

We're expanding our firmware team and looking for a motivated Firmware Engineer. You will be instrumental in developing the core logic for our next-generation container sensors, which are cutting-edge IoT devices designed to track containers worldwide using cellular and satellite communication. These incredibly low-power devices operate for over 12 years on primary cell batteries, requiring no charging or service – making them truly unattended in the field. You'll be working in a fast-paced environment where you'll have significant ownership over your projects. This is a chance to build tangible products that have a real-world impact on global logistics.

Design, develop, and maintain firmware for our low-power, long-life embedded IoT devices.

Optimize firmware for ultra-low power consumption to meet our industry-leading battery life targets.

Collaborate directly with hardware engineers on board bring-up, validation, and debugging.

Develop and maintain robust test suites and automated testing infrastructure for firmware validation.

Troubleshoot and resolve complex issues that span the hardware, firmware, and cloud interface.
