Job summary

NTNU’s Department of Design seeks an Associate Professor in Design of Safety-Critical Systems. The role focuses on human-centred design, HCI, and safety-critical systems in maritime contexts, with affiliation to NTNU Shore Control Lab.

Teaching and research will be split roughly half-and-half, contributing to education and external funding while advancing an internationally leading research environment. Applicants should have a PhD in design or closely related fields, strong pedagogical

Qualifications

• PhD required with research excellence in design or related areas.
• Pedagogical competence required.
• Experience with experimental design research and user studies is essential.
• Strong collaboration with industry and technology environments.
• Publish in high‑level international journals and conferences.
• Proficiency in English; Norwegian B2 or higher recommended.

Responsibilities

• Teach and supervise at bachelor’s, master’s and PhD levels.
• Develop courses and learning formats in HCI and safety‑critical design.
• Conduct high‑level research in maritime HCI and safety‑critical systems.
• Publish in international journals/conferences; disseminate results to academia and industry.
• Secure external research funding and contribute to education of future designers.
