Job summary

Lever, Inc. is seeking a Senior Staff Engineer to lead a newly formed Payments squad in the Netherlands. You will shape architecture, set engineering standards, and own delivery outcomes while staying close to code.

You will drive payment accuracy, processing efficiency, and scaling of the payments platform, coaching engineers and defining the operating model for durable, high-quality delivery in a fast-growing tech environment.

Qualifications

• Proven experience leading a squad or team with ownership of delivery outcomes and engineering standards.
• Hands-on capability to contribute code and review architecture decisions.
• Ability to coach engineers and shape ways of working in ambiguous environments.
• Experience with payment systems and scalable infrastructure is advantageous.

Responsibilities

• Take ownership of the Payments squad's delivery outcomes and establish engineering standards for reliable, high-quality work.
• Lead by writing technical specs, reviewing architecture decisions, and solving complex problems through code.
• Define technical and architectural strategy for the payments domain and drive clear directions.
• Drive improvements in payment accuracy, processing efficiency, and cost per transaction as the platform scales.
• Design the squad's operating model to balance speed, quality, resilience, and sustainable development.
• Own sequencing and dependencies across teams, identify blockers, and push for resolution.
• Maintain visibility of priorities and progress with stakeholders across the organization.
• Coach junior engineers and work with senior engineers to raise the bar for technical quality.
• Partner with management on hiring needs and team growth.
• Report to the Service Manager responsible for the billing and payments domain.
