Job summary

Memorial University of Newfoundland is seeking a Payroll Officer (Band Level 5) to join the People and Culture team. The role ensures accurate, timely payroll for faculty, staff, and students in a large, unionized environment, with emphasis on compliance and record accuracy.

Responsibilities include processing terminations, pay changes, tax remittances, and responding to employee inquiries, while collaborating with HR and client staff to optimize payroll operations.

Qualifications

• 3+ years payroll processing experience in a large, unionized environment.
• Two- or three-year post-secondary diploma in accounting or business administration.
• Knowledge of Canadian taxation and payroll legislation; payroll systems experience.
• Strong organization, time management, interpersonal and communication skills.
• Experience in a client-centered environment; Excel and Outlook proficiency.
• Knowledge of Banner HR and OnBase; Payroll Compliance Practitioner designation is an asset.

Responsibilities

• Process payroll for faculty, staff and students, ensuring compliance with tax rules and policies.
• Handle terminations including ROEs and final benefits payments.
• Process pay changes and retroactive payments; coordinate updates to employee records.
• Prepare tax remittances; respond to employee pay inquiries.
• Provide guidance to department representatives and address overpayments.
• Collaborate with HR and client staff on payroll matters.
