Job description

About GBM Works

GBM Works identified that offshore wind foundation installation was far from sustainable, harming marine life despite the industry's clean energy goals. Determined to change this, we set out to build a better solution in more ways than one.

Today, based in Amsterdam, we are advancing our patented Vibrojet® technology for the next generation of XXL monopiles. Our silent installation method reduces harm to marine life while addressing delays, fatigue damage, and scalability issues that come with traditional impact-hammer piling. GBM Works’ technology has completed DNV Technology Qualification and was successfully deployed at the Hollandse Kust West windfarm for Ecowende, where GBM Works installed three full-scale monopiles. We are now advancing through the SIMPLECS programme aimed at further extending the capabilities of the patented Vibrojet® technology, to cover harsh soil conditions, and as commercial interest grows, strengthening our mechanical engineering team at a senior level is our top priority.

The Role

The Senior Mechanical Engineer works within our multidisciplinary project team, alongside Geotechnical Engineers, Operations Engineers, Project Leads and other Mechanical Engineers, which is responsible for the development of all future GBM Works products and services. The team operates within a larger project structure together with a consortium of leading multinational companies and research institutes in the offshore wind energy market. At GBM Works we encourage one another to think independently but decide together.

As Senior Mechanical Engineer, you are the go-to expert on the mechanical domain of the technology. You take ownership of mechanical design decisions at prototype and commercial scale, provide technical guidance to other engineers in the team, and represent GBM Works at a senior level towards clients, manufacturing partners and project consortium members. You are practically driven, comfortable operating with a high degree of autonomy while staying alert to when a decision affects other disciplines and knowing when to bring in the right stakeholders and are able to translate ambiguous first-of-a-kind engineering challenges into robust, buildable solutions.

Responsibilities
  • Identify mechanical requirements and specifications for the system, from prototype through to commercial-scale product.
  • Act as the senior technical point of contact with end-users and partner manufacturers, translating their needs into design specifications.
  • Lead product development on the mechanical domain, in close collaboration with the geotechnical and operations disciplines and external project partners.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to other mechanical engineers, reviewing designs and calculations for robustness and manufacturability.
  • Use risk-based design assessment to safeguard the robustness and reliability of the tool, anticipating and mitigating unforeseen events or failure modes for the implementation in every further project.
  • Contribute to the longer-term mechanical engineering strategy and roadmap as GBM Works scales Vibrojet® from its first commercial deployment towards broader, larger-scale offshore projects.
Workplace

Our office is located at the Energy Transition Campus Amsterdam (ETCA) in Amsterdam North, a 10-minute walk from Amsterdam Central Station. ETCA offers excellent facilities including onsite parking, a gym, a restaurant and a high-quality coffee bar.

What Do We Offer?

  • A personal development plan, with room to grow your engineering and professional skills.
  • A modern workplace at ETCA Amsterdam, surrounded by innovation and sustainability initiatives.
  • The chance to join a team of 22 professionals with diverse backgrounds, united by curiosity, ambition and a shared drive to make a real difference.
  • Most importantly: an inspiring environment with highly motivated people determined to achieve ambitious goals.
Job requirements
  • Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering (or similar); a Bachelor’s degree with extensive relevant experience will also be considered.
  • 8+ years of working experience in mechanical engineering, including demonstrable senior-level ownership of projects, preferably in the offshore wind industry
  • Hands-on experience with the development of offshore or other heavy marine/industrial equipment, from concept through to field deployment.
  • Track record of leading or mentoring other engineers on technically complex, first-of-a-kind projects.
  • Strong stakeholder management skills; comfortable representing engineering decisions to clients and consortium partners.
  • Full-time availability
