Job summary

BOM in Eindhoven is seeking a Senior Mask Design Engineer to lead end‑to‑end tape‑out flows for photonic IC platforms. You will drive automation, develop modular scripts, and harden workflows with a cross‑functional team of design, process, metrology, and IT professionals.

Applicants should have MSc/PhD in a relevant field and 7+ years (post‑master) or 5+ years (post‑PhD) in a photonics setting, with strong Python/Ruby, Git, and GDS‑II experience. A collaborative, hands‑on leader is essential.

Qualifications

• MSc or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Applied Physics, Photonics, or a related field
• 7+ years (post-master's) or 5+ years (post-PhD) in a photonics foundry, PIC design house, EDA provider or customer-facing design enablement role
• Strong communicator and able to influence and build trust with leadership
• Proactive learner who embraces new methods, tools, and industry best practices
• Leadership potential: able to own projects independently and mentor colleagues
• High quality mindset with attention to detail
• Proficiency in Python and/or Ruby
• Working knowledge of Git and version control workflows
• Familiarity with GDS-II file format and layout tools (KLayout, Nazca, or similar)
• A natural tendency to automate repetitive work, the kind of person who scripts twice before performing a manual step

Responsibilities

• Tape-Out Execution: perform full tape-outs including super-cell creation, PCM cell generation, post-processing, GDS validation, and mask ordering
• Prepare and validate GDS files for mask production
• Conduct Design Rule Checks and ensure manufacturing rule compliance
• Post-Processing Script Development: develop, refactor, and maintain Python and Ruby based scripts
• Make scripts modular, reusable, and platform-independent
• Build tooling for the tape-out flow and mask set users
• Automation & Infrastructure: identify repetitive steps and automate them
• Set up and maintain CI validation for post-processing outputs
• Establish reproducible development environments for tape-out scripting
• Introduce automated checks for steps currently manual
• Contribute to repository structure, naming conventions, and Git workflow standards
• Ensure automated solutions are understood, documented, and maintainable by the team
• Collaboration & Reporting: review code for quality and correctness
• Coordinate with process integration, R&D, metrology, and procurement across projects
• Coordinate with EDA, PDK, and IT on environment, tooling, and access topics
