Senior Java Engineer | Frontend Delivery Platform | Java, Spring Boot, Kafka

Help build the next generation of a global frontend delivery platform at one of the Netherlands' largest banks. You'll join a newly formed squad building the platform behind WebComponents used across the organisation worldwide, with the immediate focus of migrating the frontend controller to Java — and real scope to roll the result out to multiple countries.

Internal software engineering sits at the core of this bank's technology strategy: better tooling, direct user feedback, fast delivery and heavy automation are the standard here, which means plenty of room for new ideas and genuine ownership.

About the role

You'll work in the Retail Banking Technology domain, in a multidisciplinary team responsible for realising the organisation's core platform. Your squad — part of the wider Frontend Foundation Web area — focuses on improving how the bank integrates and deploys its code, from concept to production, to deliver a high-performing, scalable, fast solution built on the latest tech stack. As a Senior Java Engineer, you will:

• Be involved in the whole development lifecycle, from refinement through to monitoring in production
• Provide support and incident management for your team's products, including 24/7 on‑call roughly once every 4–8 weeks
• Help maintain and support existing products and goals
• Create and maintain product risk documentation
• Contribute to a realistic roadmap for your squad
• Take on the Security Champion role for your team
• Help build a safe, productive environment and support colleagues' success

The stack: Java, REST APIs, Kafka, Cassandra, Azure DevOps (Repos, Pipelines, Boards, Artifacts), Maven and Elasticsearch, all running on a container hosting platform (OpenShift/Kubernetes) with new features shipped to production every two weeks.

Who are you?

• Experienced in Java 21+ (LTS versions), with a genuine passion for solving problems
• Experienced with Spring Boot / the latest Spring
• Sound knowledge of microservices
• Experience working in a distributed, challenging IT environment with async communication (Kafka is used heavily)
• Strong experience with Azure and Azure DevOps
• Strong analytical and architectural understanding, quick to grasp new technical concepts
• Good knowledge of performance, capacity and availability monitoring (Elasticsearch, Kibana)
• Passion for automation and continuous improvement
• Strong knowledge of networking (DNS, HTTP) and security (TLS, PKI)
• Experience with both NoSQL and SQL databases
• Experience working in an Agile/Scrum/DevOps team
• A strong communicator and team player, comfortable engaging directly with stakeholders

Nice to have: experience with performance testing (e.g. Gatling); a thorough understanding of test automation, CI/CD tooling and pipelines (Azure Repos/Pipelines, OpenShift, Kubernetes, Checkmarx, Azure Artifacts); enjoyment in transferring knowledge through presentations, workshops and documentation; experience in multidisciplinary agile teams; and a proactive approach to managing application risk and preventing security or operational issues.
