Urban Reef is seeking a hands-on mechanical engineering professional to own the development of our 3D printing process for bioreceptive structures. You will design, build, test and improve the hardware, electronics and control of the extruder mounted on our robot arm, working directly with the founder.

This on-site role runs five days a week from Rotterdam, with relocation to the Eindhoven area planned for 2027.

Qualifications

• Background in mechanical engineering, robotics or mechatronics (BSc/MSc or equivalent experience).
• Experience with designing and building electromechanical systems.
• Able to work independently on technical problems.
• Motivated to join an early-stage company and grow with it.
• Available to start on 1 January 2027 (or before).

Urban Reef develops bioreceptive structures for climate adaptation and biodiversity. We 3D-print these structures using a 6-axis robot arm, currently based at RDM Campus in Rotterdam.

The role

You take ownership of the development of our printing process: the hardware, electronics and control of the extruder and peripheral equipment mounted on the robot arm. You design, build, test and improve, hands-on, in our workshop. You work directly with the founder and make the technical decisions on the printing system.

Practical requirements

• This is an on-site role, five days a week. Our workshop is currently in Rotterdam; we expect to relocate to the Eindhoven area in 2027. You live in the Netherlands and are able to commute to either location.
• You already have the right to work in the Netherlands. We cannot offer visa sponsorship.
• Professional working proficiency in English. Dutch is a plus.
