Job summary

GIGA Storage is building, investing in and operating large-scale Battery Energy Storage Systems across the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany. The Lead IT Engineer (Product Owner) will translate business needs into scalable technical solutions, prioritise the backlog, and guide the development team from a functional perspective while staying hands-on.

You will own the backlog for the platform and Data Team, collaborate with Asset Management, Energy Trading, Finance and Business Development, and

Qualifications

• 7–10 years of professional IT experience as a Software Engineer, including 2+ years in a Lead Engineer or comparable role with hands-on development and technical stakeholder contact.
• Strong hands-on development with Python and SQL in a modern cloud/platform environment (PostgreSQL/MySQL, Google Cloud, Terraform, Kubernetes).
• Experience in IT/OT environments where software and data interact with physical assets; energy, BESS, utilities, grid infrastructure or energy trading is a strong advantage.
• Ability to translate business requirements into technical solutions and manage a development backlog (prioritisation, refinement, epics, user stories, sprint planning).
• Bachelor's or Master's degree in a relevant technical field with strong professional English; Netherlands residence and Amsterdam office accessibility 2–3 days per week.

Responsibilities

• Own and prioritise the backlog for our platform and Data Team; lead sprint planning, refinement, reviews and roadmaps.
• Turn business needs into scalable technical solutions and coordinate with Asset Management, Energy Trading, Finance and Business Development.
• Provide technical direction, review code, and stay hands-on with development while IT Manager handles people and strategy.
• Collaborate with software vendors, BESS suppliers and optimisers; contribute to build-versus-buy decisions.

The energy transition is changing the electricity system at unprecedented speed. As more wind and solar enter the system, large‑scale battery storage becomes essential to keeping electricity available when it is needed and the grid in balance. At GIGA Storage, we develop, invest in and operate large‑scale Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) across the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany. Our in‑house IT platform and data capabilities play a key role in operating and optimising these assets. By 2030, we aim to manage 1.5 to 2 GW of operational BESS assets, enough capacity to help supply millions of households with electricity when it is needed most. We are scaling rapidly, and that means our technology, data and development processes need to scale with us. That is where you come in.

What will you do as Lead IT Engineer (Product Owner)?

As Lead IT Engineer (Product Owner), you are the technical and functional link between our internal business and our IT development team in Amsterdam. You translate business needs into smart, scalable technical solutions and turn larger questions into clear priorities, epics and stories that the team can actually build.

Imagine Asset Management wants to see the real‑time performance and revenue of one of our battery assets in a mobile dashboard. Or an external optimiser provides settlement data that we need to validate against our own operational data. You help uncover what is really needed, design the technical solution with the team, break the work down into manageable pieces and make sure it gets delivered.

You own and prioritise the backlog for our platform and Data Team, working with stakeholders across Asset Management, Energy Trading, Finance and Business Development. You bring structure and predictability to development through clear sprint planning, refinement, reviews and a visible roadmap. You assess requests against agreed priorities, make trade‑offs transparent, and ensure stakeholders have a clear view of progress, planning and delivery.

Your background is firmly rooted in software or platform engineering. You set technical directions, contribute to solution design, review code and remain hands‑on in development yourself. You work with a stack that includes Python, PostgreSQL/MySQL, Google Cloud, Terraform, Kubernetes, Argo CD and Grafana, and you help maintain strong standards around testing, CI/CD, documentation and security.

You will also act as a technical counterpart for software vendors, BESS suppliers, optimisers, and contribute to build‑versus‑buy decisions. The IT Manager remains responsible for IT strategy, line management, and final strategic decisions. Once the direction is clear, you take ownership of the how and turn that direction into something the team can deliver.

What do you bring?

We are looking for an experienced software engineer who combines strong technical expertise with the ability to lead development from a functional perspective and work directly with the business.

• 7 to 10 years of professional IT experience as a Software Engineer, including at least 2 years in a Lead Engineer or comparable role, where you have combined hands‑on development with being a technical point of contact for business stakeholders.

• Strong hands‑on development experience with Python and SQL, combined with experience in a modern cloud and platform environment. Our stack includes PostgreSQL/MySQL, Google Cloud, Terraform and Kubernetes.

• Experience working in an IT/OT environment is a must, where software and data interact with physical assets, equipment or operational systems. Experience in energy, BESS, utilities, grid infrastructure, or energy trading is a strong advantage.

• Experience translating business requirements into technical solutions and managing a development backlog, including prioritisation, refinement, epics, user stories, and sprint planning.

• A Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, Engineering or another relevant technical field, combined with strong professional English.

• You currently live in the Netherlands and are able to work from our Amsterdam office at least 2 to 3 days per week.
