Job summary

The British School of Amsterdam invites applications for a Junior School Class Teacher (0.4FTE) to cover a maternity leave. The role is part‑time, three days? Actually two days weekly on Monday and Tuesday.

You will plan, teach and assess a broad, engaging curriculum for a designated class, and provide pastoral care in a supportive international setting. Ideal candidates hold QTS/equivalent, with experience of the English National Curriculum, EAL and inclusion.

Qualifications

• Fully qualified teacher with QTS or equivalent.
• Minimum three years' experience of teaching the National Curriculum for England.
• Experience with English language learners or EAL teaching strategies.
• Experience of teaching children with additional needs within a mainstream classroom.
• Experience of using a range of assessment tools to drive pupil progress.
• Experience of leading a curriculum subject or an aspect of curriculum development.
• Experience working in an international school (advantageous).

Job overview

We are looking for a Junior School Class Teacher to join us part-time, 0.4FTE, two days a week Monday and Tuesday. The role is for a maternity leave cover and ideally will run from November 2026 to July 2027.

The primary objective of the Junior School Class Teacher is to take responsibility for the academic and personal development of a designated class of children, ensuring a safe and supportive learning environment and providing a broad, balanced, relevant and stimulating curriculum to deliver the best outcomes for all children.

The Junior School Class Teacher’s responsibilities include:

• Actively supporting and promoting the vision, ethos and positive culture of The British School of Amsterdam

Plan, teach and review high-quality lessons, inspiring every child to love learning, to attain high standards, and to make excellent progress

Take responsibility for the pastoral care, well-being, and safeguarding of all pupils, in accordance with school policy

Develop excellent relationships with pupils, colleagues, and parents

Work closely with team members to plan, deliver and review cohesive short and medium term plans / schemes of learning, which are consistent across the Year Group

Collaborate effectively with Teaching Assistants, and support, guide and enable them to provide high quality support for all pupils in the classroom

Make appropriate provision for pupils with additional needs and English language learners (in partnership with Learning Support & EAL teams)

Create and sustain a safe, organised and purposeful classroom environment where resources are organised and accessible, promotion children’s independence

Promote consistent, positive behaviour at all times

Maintain assessment records and report on pupil progress to senior leaders and to parents/carers, in accordance with school policy

Take a positive, proactive part in the wider life of the school e.g. delivering assemblies, supervising playtime or lunchtime, supporting educational visits including residential camps (where applicable), leading an extracurricular activity, preparing for year group shows

Participate actively in staff meetings and other training sessions

Take responsibility and show commitment to continued professional development

Support and uphold the mission, vision and values of the School

PERSON SPECIFICATION

Experience

Fully qualified teacher with QTS or equivalent

Minimum three years' experience of teaching the National Curriculum for England
