Job summary

BMT Group is seeking an experienced Marine Incident Investigator to join our maritime incident investigation team. The role involves independent work across Europe and globally, performing vessel inspections and investigations for clients in the maritime industry.

You will assess damages, advise on loss mitigation and salvage options, and deliver clear reports while traveling to vessels, ports, and terminals worldwide. English proficiency is essential; Dutch/French are a plus.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in maritime studies or an equivalent maritime education.
• Seagoing experience as Master Mariner, Chief Officer, or similar nautical role.
• Previous experience as a Marine Incident Investigator.
• Extensive knowledge of vessel operations, cargo handling and maritime practices.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English (Dutch and/or French a plus).

Responsibilities

• Conduct vessel inspections and marine incident investigations.
• Investigate marine incidents, casualties, and damage claims.
• Assess cargo-related incidents and operational issues on board vessels.
• Identify causes of damage and provide factual, independent advice to clients.
• Advise clients on loss mitigation, recovery actions, salvage options, and preventative measures.
• Prepare clear, accurate, and professional reports within agreed timelines.
• Build and maintain relationships with shipowners, insurers, P&I clubs, brokers, terminals, and other maritime stakeholders.
• Support business development and identify new survey opportunities in the maritime sector.
