Tangent International are urgently looking for a Telecom / Fiber Backbone Engineer to work a 12 month rolling contract based in Netherlands (Breda)
Job Description
- As a Telecom / Fibre Backbone Engineer, you are responsible for carrying out technical work at telecommunications sites.
- You will work largely independently on-site and, where necessary, receive support from a remote engineer.
- The work is varied and may include the following:
- Independently reviewing the online schedule and preparing the work.
- Driving to the assigned site and carrying out the planned activities.
- Migrating microwave links to fiber optic connections under guidance from remote support.
- Supervising and carrying out telecom cabinet swaps, including:
- Removing existing equipment.
- Installing new equipment.
- Performing patching activities.
- Connecting and verifying fiber optic links.
- Troubleshooting optical connections, such as analyzing and resolving CRC errors within a fiber ring, in cooperation with remote support.
- Installing and configuring DWDM filters so that multiple optical signals can be combined over a single fiber connection.
- Converting fiber rings from a chain topology into a combination of chain and point-to-point structures.
- Performing fiber optic measurements and analyzing measurement results.
- Working according to technical instructions, configurations, and drawings.
- Properly documenting completed work and any deviations.
- Coordinating with remote engineers, other field engineers, and, where applicable, the customer or telecom operator.
- The engineer must be able to work independently on-site while accurately following instructions provided by remote support.
Education & Technical Background
- Completed telecommunications education or a comparable technical qualification.
- Demonstrable, several years of experience in telecommunications engineering.
- Proven experience with fiber backbone technology; FTTH-only experience is not sufficient.
- Good knowledge of telecom infrastructures and fiber optic networks.
- Experience with fiber patching, cleaning, and testing.
- Knowledge of and experience with DWDM principles.
- Basic knowledge of working with command-based scripts and the ability to load/apply existing scripts. Developing scripts independently is not required.
- Valid NEN 3140 electrical safety certification.
- Possession of a Certificate of Good Conduct (VOG) or willingness to apply for one to gain access to telecom sites and required badges/authorizations.
- Valid Category B driver's license.
The following knowledge and experience are considered strong advantages:
- Previous employment with a Dutch telecom provider or telecom contractor.
- Experience with backbone, core, or transport networks.
- Experience with fiber splicing.
- BTS experience and knowledge of mobile networks.
- Experience with microwave/radio links.
- Experience with DWDM systems.
- Experience with telecom cabinet swaps or similar migration projects.
- Experience analyzing OTDR and other fiber measurement results.
- Experience working with technical drawings, patching diagrams, and network documentation.
What We Are Primarily Looking For
- In addition to technical knowledge, we are mainly looking for an engineer who can work independently, accurately, and responsibly.
- The ideal candidate does not need to fully master every technology listed above from day one. A strong telecom/backbone foundation, a practical mindset, and the ability to learn new technologies quickly are considered just as important.
- The work is often performed in cooperation with remote support. Therefore, the engineer must be able to act independently on-site while also communicating effectively and following instructions correctly.
- In short: we are not looking for a simple "cable puller," but for an independent Telecom/Backbone Engineer who can technically assess situations on a telecom site, carefully execute planned work, and take responsibility for the final result.
**** PLEASE NOTE*** - Due to the urgent hiring we are looking for consultants who are available immediately and based in the Netherlands.
