- Discipline: Electrical / Commissioning / Energy Isolation
Role Overview
We are looking for an experienced Energy Marshal to support the construction and commissioning of a large-scale new-build data centre in the Netherlands.
The Energy Marshal will provide oversight and governance of site energisation, de-energisation, electrical isolation and hazardous-energy activities. The role will work closely with the Construction, Commissioning, Electrical and HSE teams to ensure electrical systems can be safely energised and that isolation and Lock Out / Tag Out (LOTO) processes are correctly implemented.
The position requires strong practical knowledge of MV/HV/LV electrical distribution, electrical switching, isolation procedures and commissioning within data centres or other mission-critical environments.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee and coordinate energisation, de-energisation, isolation and switching activities during construction and commissioning.
- Ensure effective implementation of the project's Energy Isolation and LOTO programme.
- Review energisation plans, switching schedules, Method Statements/MOPs, risk assessments/JHAs, permits and isolation procedures.
- Verify electrical systems are ready and appropriately controlled before energisation.
- Review and audit contractor and subcontractor compliance with project electrical-safety requirements.
- Coordinate energy-isolation activities between the General Contractor, commissioning teams, electrical contractors, HSE and operations stakeholders.
- Review single-line diagrams (SLDs) and electrical-system configurations to understand sources of energy, system redundancy and isolation requirements.
- Support safe commissioning and energisation of systems including MV/HV/LV distribution, transformers, switchgear, UPS, generators and associated electrical infrastructure.
- Maintain robust control of multiple sources of hazardous energy during construction and commissioning.
- Participate in pre-energisation reviews and readiness assessments.
- Monitor site practices and intervene where energisation or isolation activities do not meet the required safety standards.
- Support investigation and close-out of issues relating to electrical safety, switching, LOTO and energisation.
Experience & Qualifications
- Electrical Engineering qualification, electrical trade qualification or equivalent relevant technical background.
- Strong experience in data centre construction and/or commissioning, ideally on hyperscale or large mission-critical projects.
- Demonstrable experience with MV/HV switching, energisation and electrical isolation.
- Strong practical understanding of LOTO / Control of Hazardous Energy.
- Knowledge and practical experience relevant to NEN 3140 and/or NEN 3840.
- Previous responsibilities as an Energy Marshal, Authorised Person, Senior Authorised Person, Switching Engineer, HV Commissioning Engineer or equivalent would be highly advantageous.
- Ability to interpret SLDs, electrical distribution architecture, switching sequences and system redundancies.
- Understanding of arc-flash risks and electrical-safety controls.
- Experience working alongside General Contractors, electrical subcontractors, commissioning teams and HSE teams.
- Strong communication skills with the confidence to challenge unsafe conditions or activities.
- Comfortable working in a fast-paced construction environment with multiple systems progressing through energisation simultaneously.
