The Gerrit Rietveld Academie is seeking a Coordinator of the designLAB department for 12 hours per week (0.3 FTE). You will act as the liaison among students, teachers, and the academy, handling administrative duties, inquiries, and events coordination to support teaching and research activities.
The role requires strong communication, organization, and interpersonal skills, with proficiency in both Dutch and English, and the ability to work independently in a small, diverse team.
The Gerrit Rietveld Academie is looking for a:
The Gerrit Rietveld Academie is a small-scale, independent, internationally oriented university of applied arts for fine art and design. The academy is characterised by research-based and experimental art education. Heads of department, lecturers, workshop specialists, students and staff jointly shape the form and content of teaching and research.
Diversity and inclusion, accessibility, ecology and transparency are key priorities for the Academy and therefore serve as guiding principles for the actions of members of the academic community.
Students at the Rietveld Academie come from 55 different countries, making the Academy a diverse community.
The day-to-day running of the academy is in the hands of the Executive Board and the Director of Undergraduate Studies and Workshops, the Director of Postgraduate Studies and Research, and the Director of Operations. The academy has approximately 365 staff members.
As the current coordinator leaves the department, designLAB is seeking the perfect successor.
At designLAB, we take a hands-on approach to art and design. Our courses combine theory, research, concept development, and making, and are structured around assignments that gradually become more open. This supports a shift from guided experimentation toward a self-directed, critical practice, where critical thinking, experiments, failures, and detours are treated as meaningful parts of the learning process.
Feedback, dialogue, and critique are central to the department. Students learn not only how to make work, but also how to articulate, contextualise, and critically reflect on it. We foster a collaborative environment in which work is shared, discussed, and developed over time. Students are supported in developing their own practices - shaping their methodologies and artistic language - while encouraging critical engagement with cultural, social, and artistic contexts. Within this diverse environment, students become autonomous makers, able to position their work within and beyond established disciplinary boundaries.
At designLAB, we work within an open studio landscape that fosters sharing, collaboration, and a sense of community. We value spending time together beyond schoolwork, bringing students and teachers together through collective activities. Each member of the team has their own expertise, ranging from material knowledge and hands‑on skills to research, writing, and more. We make space for guest lectures, keeping the curriculum fluid, and open to input and needs from both students and the team. Each year, designLAB goes on a department trip and, connected to different courses of the department, smaller excursions and trips are organized. There is a big exhibition in March each year, alongside smaller, self‑organised exhibitions that are supported and encouraged by the department. At the forefront, we put community and connecting with the world outside the academy through regular studio, atelier, and exhibition visits.
We strive for diversity and recruit colleagues from groups that are currently under-represented in our education sector. Where candidates are equally suitable, we give preference to a candidate who enhances diversity within our team.
To ensure we assess all candidates’ suitability for the role in the same way, we do not ask you to provide a CV or cover letter. Instead, we ask all candidates the same questions, which give us an insight into how well you meet the job requirements. Please take care when completing the questionnaire, this is the only information on which we will assess you at this stage.
