JOB OVERVIEW

We are looking for a Coordinator Artistic and Technical Development for 32-36 hours per week, available for an immediate start.

ABOUT THE RIJKSAKADEMIE

The Rijksakademie offers a two-year residency programme to approximately fifty artists from around the world. The programme supports artistic development through providing space for research, experimentation, and the production of new work. Residents are provided with a studio, a working budget, and a stipend, and work with advanced technical workshops, a range of artistic advisors who are professionals in the field, and an interdisciplinary community. Within this international and diverse ecosystem, artists have the freedom to work and experiment without a fixed curriculum.

The Rijksakademie distinguishes itself as a platform for artistic innovation and reflection. It plays a crucial role in the cultural ecosystem, offering artists the opportunity to develop and connect with an international network. Alumni are represented in leading museums, biennials, and artistic initiatives worldwide.

The Rijksakademie firmly believes that art plays an essential role in an open, innovative, and diverse society. Artists challenge existing structures, ask critical questions, and open up new perspectives. By offering artists from around the world the opportunity to develop their work and ideas, the Rijksakademie strengthens the impact and quality of contemporary art – acting as a catalyst for new art forms and contributing to the enrichment of the global artistic landscape. With a focus on international collaboration and knowledge exchange, the residency is a place where critical dialogue and artistic transformation go hand in hand.

As “Coordinator Artistic and Technical Development” at the Rijksakademie, you create and facilitate an environment where artists are given the maximum space to experiment, develop, and explore new artistic directions. A natural connector, you inspire and know how to stimulate, support and manage a collective working culture. You bring knowledge of diverse and complex artistic practices and discourses, and approach your work with a global perspective, fostering dialogue, and collaboration.

You have a thorough understanding of institutional ecosystems, and work actively with the Rijksakademie team, residents, and artistic advisors to maintain a calm and productive work setting. You are playing a key role in the mediation between the different individual and collective needs and expectations within the Rijksakademie, while remaining attuned to local, national, and international contexts. You facilitate the artistic advisors throughout their collaboration with the Rijksakademie

You possess a strong international network and a broad knowledge of contemporary visual arts. You are a connecting force who ensures that the Rijksakademie continues to play a leading role within the Dutch and international art field.

TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • You create a work environment in collaboration with the Rijksakademie team where artists can develop their artistic trajectory.
  • You stimulate inspiring learning conditions where reflection, cross-pollination, and interdisciplinary collaboration are encouraged.
  • You play an active role in the selection process of new residents.
  • You maintain and expand a strong international network, including artists, curators, and institutions.
  • You understand the role of the Rijksakademie within the international contemporary art field and contribute strategically to its positioning and long-term relevance.
  • You work closely with the General Director, Director of Development, and the team to achieve the artistic and organisational objectives.
  • You collaborate closely with the group of artistic advisors and the technical specialists to encourage and safeguard artistic development.
  • You coordinate the operations between the workshops and the residency and artistic programme.
  • You oversee and safeguard the artistic coherence and quality of the residency programme, ensuring alignment between artistic vision, institutional mission, and operational structures.
  • You take responsibility for facilitating complex artistic processes, including mediation, conflict resolution, and balancing individual and collective needs.
  • Given the working hours and location, you are based in the Netherlands, or ready to move to the Netherlands prior to the start of the position.
EXPERTISE AND EXPERIENCE
  • You have an in-depth knowledge of contemporary art and a broad orientation in various artistic practices and discourses, with a global perspective.

  • You navigate smoothly in an environment with diverse perspectives and backgrounds. You have proven experience working in various contexts, understand their dynamics, and know how to connect with a wide range of stakeholders in an inclusive and respectful manner.
  • You have a strong understanding of the social and political context of art and know how to safeguard and strengthen artistic values within this landscape.
  • You have experience working with mid-career or established artists and understand the specific challenges of post-academic artistic development.
YOUR PERSONAL PROFILE
  • You have an open and curious mindset and know how to facilitate an inclusive community and are a solutions-oriented person.
  • You know how to foster a space where trust, freedom, and artistic experimentation go hand in hand.
  • You have the ability to encourage collaboration and connection, both within the Rijksakademie and with the local, national and international art field.
  • You know how to bring together different visions and interests and create an atmosphere where artists can reach their full potential.
  • Your attention is driven to construct a secure enough and serene workspace. You demonstrate excellent diplomatic skills and are experienced in navigating institutional sensitivities, cultural differences, and competing expectations.
