Microsoft’s Cloud Operations and Innovation (CO+I) is the engine that powers Microsoft's cloud services. The team is responsible for designing, building and operating our unified global datacenters; managing the demand planning and capacity utilization of our unified infrastructure; and responsible for all of the operations needed to run the physical infrastructure (including supply chain, hardware, power, security, and workflow teams). We focus on smart growth with an emphasis on automation, data driven engineering, cost-effectiveness, and environmental sustainability.

We deliver the core infrastructure and foundational technologies for Microsoft's over 200 online businesses including Bing, MSN, Office 365, Xbox Live, Skype, OneDrive and the Microsoft Azure platform. We are looking for an exceptional Network Engineer to help design, automate, deploy, monitor, and operate our core network.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Proven technical experience in network design, development, and automation
  • OR Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Optical Engineering, Computer Science, Engineering, Information Technology, or related field AND good years of technical experience in network design, development, and automation
  • OR Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Optical Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field AND good technical experience in network design, development, and automation.
  • Experience in at least one programming language (preferably Python and APIs).
  • Experience with Infrastructure as Code (IaC) principles to manage and provision network resources efficiently.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Proven years of technical experience in network design, development, and automation
  • OR Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Optical Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field AND good years of technical experience in network design, development, and automation
  • OR Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Optical Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field AND good years of technical experience in network design, development, and automation
  • OR Doctorate Degree in Electrical Engineering, Optical Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field.
  • Good years’ of experience with network authentication systems such as TACACS+ (Cisco ISE, Duo)
  • Possession of Industry certifications within the network Engineering CCNP or CCIE Route & Switch and work with industrial control systems.
  • Prior experience with industrial control systems is preferred (not mandatory)
  • Strong foundation in Python programming and APIs as they relate to Network Automation.

Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:

  • Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.
Responsibilities

Network Design and Implementation

  • Perform technical analysis and lead the design architecture of network plans for the enterprise, analyzing network & security requirements of the business and architects’ solutions that include highly available and resilient designs.
  • Install, upgrade, and maintain network or security hardware and operating system and software as needed, leveraging automation with experience in network hardware from Cisco, Arista and Palo Alto.
  • Develops knowledge of network technologies to draw insights that aid in network design, implementation, and operation.
  • Assists in gathering and processing information required to complete Bills of Materials (BoMs) and helps translate components of high-level designs for datacenters or network sites into low-level designs; collaborates with internal teams and external stakeholders to develop network infrastructure within existing datacenters or network sites with guidance from other engineers.
  • Contributes to the development or modification of network automation tools to make efficient use of infrastructure and resources by automating performance of various tasks related to network implementation, operations, testing, and incident management.

Maintaining and Operating Networks

  • Participate in on-call DRI rotation to support Network Infrastructure services.
  • Triages, troubleshoots, and repairs basic live site issues using troubleshooting guides and standard tooling with minimal disruption to customers.
  • Oversee complex infrastructure network or security projects, including design, deployment, and monitoring, and perform complex incident management and problem resolution for network and security systems.
  • Handle Layer 3 technologies, including IPv4, BGP, EIGRP, OSPF, IPv6, HSRP, and VRRP. Apply strong technical knowledge of enterprise networking solutions for very large environments, at scale (e.g., MPLS/BGP, routing, switching, SDN/NFV, EVPN VXLAN), and have knowledge of SD-WAN technologies.

Monitor network system state using tools such as SNMP, Sflow/netflow, and Telemetry, in compliance with current capacity plan guidelines, and network services budgets, including reviewing invoices from service providers for usage, errors, and inconsistencies, and making adjustments where feasible.

Develops an understanding of quality assurance and network or code review processes by assisting in identifying risks and classes of bugs and becoming familiar with essential details related to network implementation (e.g., physical connectivity, power, protocols, telemetry) and design qualification.

Supports the management of incidents across one or more workstreams by applying technical knowledge to diagnose and triage issues; takes notes during incidents and participates in post mortem and root cause analysis processes.

Supporting People

  • Collaborate with Information Technology staff and business personnel in the creation and turnover of solutions for production-level operations, and act as a source for direction, training, and guidance for less experienced department staff, demonstrating leadership ability in a fast-paced environment.
  • Provides instructions to datacenter or network site staff/technicians on how to repair, replace, and maintain physical network hardware and components deployed in production.
