Job description

Do you have a keen interest in working in a dynamic operational environment and traveling around the world? You might be just the one we are looking for!

Our heavy lift vessels (semi-submersible dock ships & wide deck carriers) ship the kind of cargo that doesn’t fit on a regular cargo vessel. Think of topsides, monopiles for offshore wind turbines, mega yachts, naval equipment, and refinery modules. And that’s where you come in. As a Cargo Superintendent at Roll Group, you make it happen. You’ll be part of a company that is making a difference by moving the transition of energy and industry around the globe.

Company

Roll Group offers a total solution for the transportation, lifting and installation of heavy cargo. Our land/sea combination enables us to offer ‘Factory to Foundation’ solutions. With engineering capabilities, a diverse asset base and the ability to adapt, Roll Group takes care of heavy cargo and provides effective, innovative and sustainable services using our unique know-how.

Roll Group owns a versatile heavy-transport seagoing fleet consisting of dock-type vessels, which all have the option of three loading modes – Ro-Ro, Flo-Flo and Lo-Lo – as well as deck carriers. On the land side, Roll Group operates a large number of modern heavy-lift cranes with capacities of up to 4,000 tonnes, Self-Propelled Modular Trailers (SPMTs) and conventional trailers. The specific characteristics of Roll Group’s asset base ensure the ability to serve a wide range of markets, such as Oil & Gas and Renewable Energy.

Your role

The Cargo Superintendent (CSI) prepares and executes all cargo-related operations for projects assigned to the CSI. The primary mission is to manage and supervise the port calls to ensure that the operations are being conducted safely and, in all aspects, in an efficient way.

Responsibilities
  • Prepare all cargo-related operations. The preparations include but are not limited to Loading and discharging feasibility checks (tide, quay, bollards, fenders etc.) ballast, and stability calculation;
  • Loading, discharging, and sea-fastening plans;
  • Coordinate the required activities, equipment, and resources for the planned cargo operations;
  • Provide the parties involved for each project with the applicable documents, plans and drawings;
  • Arrange and perform the required project, and safety meetings on site;
  • Execute the planned loading, sea-fastening, and discharging operations on board the vessels;
  • Report all on site activities during preparation, loading, sea-fastening, and discharging;
  • Issue CSI reports and address lessons learned to the Manager of Cargo Operations, Marine;
  • Evaluate operational feasibility for bids and tenders, including cost elements for the Commercial department.
Qualifications
  • Higher Vocational Education (Maritime Officer, Mechanical Engineering, or similar);
  • Minimum of 2 years relevant experience in a similar position;
  • Competent user of Microsoft Office and GHS software is beneficial.
Requirements for success
  • Can demonstrate leadership in safety and quality aspects of the role;
  • Is well versed in maritime operations and heavy lift industry;
  • Has ship knowledge (in the broad sense of the word): Construction of ships, ballast and propulsion systems, cranes, hatches/pontoons;
  • Has sea-fastening / lashing of cargo (practical knowledge but also being able to make basic calculations);
  • Knows cranes handling (lifting loads, lashing loads, basic knowledge of lifting equipment);
  • Can plan and organize activities related to loading/unloading and sea-fastening;
  • Has knowledge of stowage plans (making and changing on site if necessary);
  • Has stability knowledge (being able to make calculations, but also being able to estimate what is feasible and what is not), knowledge of GHS is a plus;
  • Is an excellent team player that communicates effectively with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Can work independently and organized within tight time frames;
  • Is willing to share knowledge, experience and eager to explore innovative solutions;
  • Is flexible, willing to adapt, embracing change and continual improvement;
  • Is willing to travel (normal circumstances 100‑120 days per year).
