Job summary

Nikon BioImaging Lab (NBIL) in Leiden, The Netherlands, offers a 6‑month Data Science & Business Intelligence internship aligned with MSc studies. Start date is flexible, preferably Oct 2026, and the role combines technical development with real-world applications in biotech and pharma ecosystems.

You will extend an existing tool to map biotech/ pharma partners, link news to companies, and monitor industry trends, with mentorship from business and scientific staff.

Qualifications

• MSc student in Data Science, Artificial Intelligence, Computer Science, Bioinformatics or related field.
• Currently enrolled at a Dutch university for the duration of the internship.
• Experience with Python and data analysis (PowerBI is a plus).
• Basic knowledge of machine learning and/or NLP.
• Enjoy working with real-world, unstructured data.
• Affinity with life sciences is a plus (but not required).
• Able to communicate clearly with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
• Proactive and eager to improve and extend existing systems.
• Located in Leiden area.

Responsibilities

• Expand and structure databases of companies, technologies, and market segments.
• Integrate multiple data sources (e.g. company websites, news feeds, conference listings).
• Apply NLP to match news and content to companies.
• Develop relevance scoring or classification methods for business development use cases.
• Identify trends and signals in fast-moving life-science domains.
• Improve usability and interpretability of outputs for non-technical users.
• Present insights and recommendations to the NBIL team.
