Job summary

Knowles Corporation in Malaysia is looking for a Tooling Engineer (Hybrid Designer and Toolmaker) with 4+ years in precision stamping or tooling. You will design, assemble, and troubleshoot tooling, maintain die sets, and work closely with engineers and toolmakers to ensure production readiness.

You will drive continuous die improvement, apply FMEA and PDCA, and support new product development while maintaining high quality and safety standards.

Job description

1. Responsible for the end-to-end tooling lifecycle by combining tooling design engineering with hands-on toolmaking capability. The role controls die-print documentation, develops and improves precision stamping dies, translates design intent into manufacturable tooling, and supports assembly, try-out, troubleshooting, repair, and continuous improvement of die performance and manufacturing processes.

2. Responsible for assembling, maintenance and repair of specialized metal punching, stamping, and forming dies which are critical elements in a variety of Presses, plus automatic and manually operated custom built machinery. An in-depth knowledge of each machine is essential together with the capability to work on sub-miniature tool elements constructed from tool steel and carbide. This by necessity, will involve the use of microscopes for grinding and polishing operations. Component part quality is the responsibility of the hybrid engineer throughout the production process, and he is expected to carry out inspection of the die elements and component parts to ensure conformity.

Specific Duties And Responsibilities

1. Ensure proper tooling design and documentation of Die prints, Die maintenance, processes and improvement projects for NPI and Mass Production Items. List of duties should involve:

c) Ownership and Maintenance of the Die Print Database

d) Updated to all Die and Die Spares prints

e) Generation to Die Prints where non exist in appropriate software format.

2. Cost improvement of stamping operation and always looks for area of opportunity to cut/reduce product cost.

a) Set budgetary goals for cost improvement programs, such as tooling repair cost.

b) Initiate, implement and keep track of quality, productivity and other engineering improvement projects. Always look for technical advancement and breakthrough in project development.

3.Drive for continuous die improvement. Constantly drive and improve problematic dies such as top five high down at production. He has to initiate, support & participate in TQM activities and problem solving task force.

4.Ensure continuous improvement program for quality ppm, Interact with customers on behalf of QE on technical aspect.

5.Communicate closely with Die maintenance group, product development group and die vendors during new products/die development stage. Ensure all new products/ die vendors during new product meeting the project deadline.

6. Applying FMEA method for new tooling development. Perform tooling qualification per procedures and meeting KEM die specification.

7. Work as a team with Tooling Engineer, Toolmakers, and Supervisor to ensure the effectiveness of all task performed. He has to use this technical skill in coaching, motivating and counseling the subordinates especially toolmakers. Always encourage teamwork within stamping department.

8. Responsible for the following indicators. Use PDCA approach to address any short fall. Machine Utilization, Die related downtime, which include, die repair, awaiting toolmakers; set-up/changeover.

9. Attend operation and tooling review meeting and present indicators if necessary.

10. To carry out any other duties as required by Superior.

a) Hands on new tooling assembly, troubleshoot and diagnose faults associated with Primary press operations.

b) Maintain and repair die sets used in manufacturing to extremely close tolerances.

d) Repair and sharpen dies proactively to ensure all are in a “Production Ready” condition.

f) Set and adjust dies in presses if required.

g) Maintain minimum inventory of spare die elements to ensure immediate availability.

h) Responsible for die ownership, storage and maintaining press stroke/maintenance log for each die.

i) Work with and assist in training local Die makers, Press Setter/Operators and Supervision.

Position Requirement

Position : Tooling Engineer (Hybrid Designer and Toolmaker)

Education : Minimum Degree holder from local/oversea institute in Engineering discipline with 2 years of experience in related field OR.

Experience : Minimum 4 years of experience in the field of precision stamping or machining with 3 years of design experience in similar capacity for those without the tertiary qualification.

Skill : Hybrid capability in tooling design and hands-on toolmaking. Proficient in 2D/3D CAD, die design, tolerance stack-up, GD&T, material and heat-treatment selection, and preparation of detailed manufacturing drawings and bills of materials. Able to perform precision fitting, grinding, polishing, machining, die assembly, press try-out, troubleshooting, repair, and optimization of stamping tools to meet dimensional, quality, productivity, and safety requirements.

Special Requirement : Demonstrated ability to convert product and process requirements into robust, manufacturable tooling designs and personally support tool fabrication, assembly, fitting, debugging, qualification, and production release. Must be able to read and interpret complex technical drawings, use precision measuring instruments, diagnose die and press-related defects systematically, and collaborate effectively with engineers, toolmakers, production, quality, and external tooling vendors. Candidates who can independently design tooling and perform hands-on tool troubleshooting will have an added advantage.
