Job summary

Private Advertiser is seeking an experienced Mandarin teacher to deliver high-quality lessons in an international school setting. The role focuses on IGCSE and A Level Mandarin, developing proficiency across listening, speaking, reading and writing, and preparing students for external examinations.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Mandarin, Chinese language, Chinese studies, education or related field.
• Teaching qualification such as PGCE/PGDE/QTS or equivalent is required.
• Experience teaching Mandarin at secondary school level.
• Strong knowledge of IGCSE Mandarin curriculum and examination requirements.
• Excellent written and spoken Mandarin and English.

Responsibilities

• Plan and deliver engaging Mandarin lessons for IGCSE and A Level students.
• Develop listening, speaking, reading and writing skills according to the syllabus.
• Prepare students for IGCSE and A Level examinations with revision and practice.
• Use diverse teaching strategies and digital tools to support learning.
• Assess progress and provide feedback to students and parents.

Job description

The Mandarin Teacher is responsible for planning and delivering high-quality Mandarin lessons to students an international school setting, at IGCSE and A Level, supporting their academic progress and preparing them effectively for external examinations. The successful candidate will create an engaging, supportive, and challenging learning environment that develops students’ Mandarin language proficiency, cultural understanding, and confidence.

Key Responsibilities

Teaching & Learning

Plan and deliver engaging, differentiated Mandarin lessons for IGCSE and A Level students.

Develop students’ skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing in accordance with the relevant examination syllabus.

Prepare students effectively for IGCSE and A Level examinations through structured teaching, revision, and examination practice.

Use a variety of teaching strategies and resources to accommodate different learning abilities and learning styles.

Integrate appropriate digital tools and resources to enhance language learning.

Promote active participation and encourage students to use Mandarin confidently in the classroom.

Provide clear explanations, constructive feedback, and appropriate academic support to students.

Curriculum & Assessment

Develop and implement schemes of work, lesson plans, learning materials, and assessment activities.

Ensure teaching and learning are aligned with the relevant IGCSE and A Level Mandarin curriculum and examination requirements.

Regularly assess students’ progress and maintain accurate records of attainment.

Set, mark, and moderate assessments, coursework, tests, and examination-style tasks as required.

Analyse assessment results and use the findings to identify areas for improvement and provide targeted support.

Prepare students for oral examinations, written examinations, and other assessment components where applicable.

Student Support & Pastoral Responsibilities

Monitor students’ academic progress, attendance, engagement, and behaviour.

Provide additional support and intervention for students who require further assistance.

Encourage students to develop independent learning, effective study habits, and examination skills.

Build positive and professional relationships with students while maintaining appropriate boundaries.

Contribute to the wider pastoral and academic development of students.

Work collaboratively with colleagues within the Mandarin/Modern Languages Department and across the school.

Participate in departmental meetings, curriculum planning, standardisation, and professional development activities.

Communicate regularly and professionally with parents regarding students’ progress and academic development.

Work closely with the Head of Department and senior leadership team to support departmental and school-wide objectives.

Co-Curricular & School Responsibilities

Contribute to school events, cultural activities, language-related activities, and co-curricular programmes.

Support opportunities that promote Mandarin language and Chinese culture within the wider school community.

Participate in school trips, activities, meetings, professional development, and other duties as reasonably required.

Support the school’s policies, procedures, safeguarding practices, and expectations for professional conduct.

Qualifications & Experience

A recognised Bachelor’s Degree in Mandarin, Chinese Language, Chinese Studies, Education, or a related field.

A recognised teaching qualification such as PGCE, PGDE, QTS, or equivalent.

Experience teaching Mandarin at secondary school level.

Strong knowledge of the IGCSE Mandarin curriculum and examination requirements.

Excellent written and spoken Mandarin and English.

Strong classroom management and communication skills.

Experience teaching A Level Mandarin.

Experience preparing students for Cambridge or other international examination boards.

Experience teaching in an international school or British curriculum environment.

Knowledge of Chinese language and culture beyond the classroom.

Experience supporting students with different learning needs and abilities.

Strong subject knowledge and passion for Mandarin language education.

Excellent lesson planning and delivery skills.

Strong understanding of examination preparation and assessment.
