Job summary

Benchmark Electronics is seeking a skilled Sheet Metal Design Engineer in Penang to design and optimise metal components using CAD tools, ensuring manufacturability and cost efficiency. You will collaborate with manufacturing, QA, and procurement to drive product development from concept to production.

The role requires a Mechanical Engineering background, 3-5 years of sheet metal experience, and proficiency in AutoCAD, SolidWorks or CATIA.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science or a related engineering discipline
• 3-5 years of professional experience in sheet metal design and engineering or related mechanical engineering roles
• Proficiency in CAD software such as AutoCAD, SolidWorks, CATIA or equivalent design tools
• Strong knowledge of sheet metal fabrication processes including punching, bending, welding, stamping and assembly techniques
• Understanding of material properties, tolerances, and manufacturing constraints specific to sheet metal production
• Experience with engineering analysis tools and simulation software is advantageous
• Excellent problem-solving capabilities and attention to detail
• Strong communication skills and ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary teams
• Knowledge of quality standards and industry regulations such as ISO certifications
• Proficiency in English; knowledge of additional languages is a plus

Responsibilities

• Design and develop sheet metal components and assemblies using CAD software, ensuring compliance with engineering specifications and manufacturing capabilities
• Conduct technical analyses and feasibility studies to optimise sheet metal designs for cost efficiency, strength and manufacturability
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams including manufacturing, quality assurance and procurement to support product development from concept through to production
• Review and improve existing sheet metal designs to enhance performance, reduce production costs and minimise waste
• Prepare detailed technical drawings, process specifications and bills of materials for manufacturing teams
• Support tooling design and process optimisation for sheet metal fabrication, stamping and assembly operations
• Conduct design reviews and provide technical recommendations to ensure products meet all engineering and quality requirements
• Troubleshoot manufacturing issues related to sheet metal components and implement corrective actions
• Maintain comprehensive documentation of designs, specifications and process improvements
• Stay current with advancements in sheet metal manufacturing technologies and industry best practices
