Job summary

Altera in Penang, Malaysia is seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer to lead the mechanical design and thermal engineering of engineering validation boards, FPGA platforms, PCIe cards, and development kits. This role covers concept through production release, with a focus on manufacturability and reliability.

The ideal candidate brings 10+ years in mechanical design for electronics, proficiency in CAD tools, and strong thermal analysis capabilities.

Qualifications

• 10+ years of hands-on mechanical design experience for electronics platforms.
• Proficient with Creo and/or SolidWorks for complex part and enclosure design.
• Experience with thermal simulation tools (e.g., ANSYS Icepak, FloTHERM) and lab correlation.
• Strong understanding of heat transfer, conduction, convection, and thermal resistance networks.
• Experience designing mechanical solutions around PCBs, PCIe cards, and FPGA packages.
• Knowledge of DFM/ DFA and manufacturing processes.

Responsibilities

• Own mechanical architecture for engineering validation boards, FPGA platforms, PCIe and accessory cards, and related systems.
• Create and maintain 3D CAD designs and production drawings; define interfaces and heatsink assemblies.
• Develop heatsink and thermal-management solutions for high-power designs.
• Perform and interpret thermal simulations; correlate models with lab measurements.
• Lead tolerance analysis, structural checks, and design-for-reliability assessments.
• Drive design execution from requirements through reviews, prototype fabrication, validation, and release of documentation.
• Plan hands-on bring-up and validation activities including environmental testing and root-cause analysis.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to resolve cross-domain constraints and deliver platform-level solutions.
• Engage vendors and contract manufacturers on DFM/ DFA, tooling, and production readiness.
• Mentor engineers and raise design and simulation standards.
