Job summary

Arup is seeking a Senior Electrical Engineer in Penang to lead electrical design packages for major infrastructure projects across Malaysia. You will provide technical leadership, design management and mentor junior engineers from concept through handover.

You will collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, manage interfaces with clients and contractors, and ensure design integrity while contributing to regional opportunities.

Qualifications

• Recognised tertiary qualification in Electrical Engineering or progress towards accreditation.
• At least 8 years of electrical design experience in consultancy.
• Strong technical expertise in electrical building services and infrastructure.
• Experience coordinating across multiple disciplines with clients and stakeholders.
• Excellent communication, leadership and report-writing skills; BIM awareness.

Responsibilities

• Lead the design and delivery of electrical engineering packages across all project phases.
• Provide technical expertise across LV and MV/HV distribution, standby power, lighting, earthing and security.
• Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams, clients, contractors and authorities for seamless design integration.
• Manage project deliverables, technical reviews, design programmes, risks, budgets and client expectations.
• Mentor junior engineers and contribute to continuous improvement and regional infrastructure projects.

As a Senior Electrical Engineer within Arup's Infra MEP team, based in Penang, you will play a key role in delivering electrical engineering solutions for major infrastructure projects across Malaysia and the wider region, with a particular focus on airport, rail, and transport developments. You will provide technical leadership, design management, and project delivery expertise while guiding and mentoring junior engineers within the team. Working closely with multidisciplinary teams and client stakeholders, you will help deliver integrated engineering solutions throughout the design, tender, construction, and handover phases of complex projects.

The Opportunity

• Lead the design and delivery of electrical engineering packages across all project phases, from concept and detailed design through to construction support and handover.
• Provide technical expertise across electrical systems including LV and MV/HV distribution, standby power, UPS, lighting, earthing, lightning protection, ELV, ICT, telecommunications, security, vertical transportation, and utility infrastructure.
• Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams, clients, contractors, authorities, and stakeholders to ensure successful project outcomes and seamless design integration.
• Manage project deliverables, technical reviews, design programmes, risks, budgets, quality requirements, and client expectations while supporting project managers and directors.
• Mentor and develop junior engineers, contribute to continuous improvement initiatives, support business development activities, and collaborate with regional Arup teams on major infrastructure projects.

Is this role right for you?

• A recognised tertiary qualification in Electrical Engineering and membership of a relevant professional institution, or significant progress towards professional accreditation.
• At least 8 years of electrical design experience within an engineering consultancy, including building services and infrastructure projects.
• Strong technical expertise in electrical building services and infrastructure systems, with experience on complex multidisciplinary developments such as airports, rail stations, tunnels, industrial facilities, data centres, or mixed-use projects.
• Proven experience coordinating across multiple disciplines, leading technical discussions, managing interfaces, and working directly with clients and key stakeholders.
• Excellent communication, leadership, mentoring, and report‑writing skills, together with BIM and digital delivery awareness, a collaborative mindset, and a strong drive to achieve excellence.
