Job summary

Arup in Kuala Lumpur is seeking a Transmission and Distribution Engineer to join the Southeast Asia team. The role focuses on design of medium and high‑voltage substations for energy projects, coordination with regional offices, and development of skills and capabilities across the Energy group.

The position offers opportunities to contribute to life‑cycle design, asset management, and bid development, with a strong emphasis on collaboration, safety, and client service.

The Opportunity

The primary focus of the position will be to undertake the role of Transmission and Distribution (T&D) Engineer within the Kuala Lumpur and Southeast Asia (SEA) Team. The focus of this role in the longer term will be to support energy and infrastructure projects locally and regionally and be instrumental to the development of new skills, total life cycle design, asset management, operations and maintenance, supporting the development of the Energy team’s capability, and consequential business growth Responsibility for improving the technical aspects of work to reduce risk to Arup, reduce our costs, improve our staff satisfaction and improve the quality of our client service and offering The role will operate across all Infrastructure Groups whilst coordinating regionally with other offices and businesses.

Responsibilities/Accountabilities
  • Undertake detailed design of medium (distribution) and high voltage (transmission) substations for energy projects and other relevant projects, including data centres.
  • Review conceptual and schematic designs for compliance with industry standards and client specifications whilst developing a healthy working relationship with clients.
  • Collaborate with drafting teams to ensure designs reflect the latest technical and client requirements.
  • Provide technical oversight during Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT) and Site Acceptance Tests (SAT).
  • Collaborate with the substation engineering resources and specialists, across Australasia, in the design of transmission and distribution substation.
  • Assist with the grid connection of Renewable Energy projects.
  • Participate in work winning activities and bid preparation.
  • Support the development of bids to acquire substation design projects with regards to scope, budget and schedule in liaison with other Arup Energy teams, partners, subcontractors and clients.
  • Develop project schedules, risk assessments, and techno-commercial documentation for tender submissions.
  • Innovation and a significantly input to the development and testing of technical solutions.
  • Providing technical leadership and guidance for junior engineers;

Is this role right for you?
Technical Skills and Qualifications
  • Recognised relevant tertiary qualifications in in Electrical Engineering with a primary focus of High Voltage Engineering and/or Power Systems Engineering or similar area;
  • Relevant experience with Conceptual Design, FEED and Detailed Design of substations at Transmission and Distribution voltage levels;
  • Proficient in the Electricity Supply Agreement application process with TNB, with strong networking and professional relationships with the relevant stakeholders;
  • Well verse with Malaysian regulatory requirements including design compliance against TNB and Suruhanjaya Tenaga requirements.
  • Relevant industry experience in energy sector, transmission and distribution projects within a consulting or contractor business environment;
  • Membership of relevant professional institutions/professional peer bodies or significant credit towards eligibility for membership;
  • Proven working knowledge of relevant legislation, regulations, codes of practice, and guidelines – and Arup’s related procedures including OH&S
