Job summary

Razer Merchant Services Sdn. Bhd. in Malaysia is seeking a Merchant Risk and Underwriting Specialist to evaluate merchant applications, perform risk assessments, and ensure compliance with payment network rules.

You will monitor merchant accounts, implement risk strategies, conduct ODD reviews, and collaborate with sales, operations, and risk teams to optimize underwriting processes. The role requires strong analytical skills, knowledge of KYC/KYB/AML, and experience with payment processing

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Business, Risk Management, or related field.
  • 1-3 years in merchant underwriting or fraud prevention.
  • Strong knowledge of KYC, KYB, AML and fraud risk frameworks.
  • Familiarity with payment schemes and compliance regulations.
  • Proficiency with risk management tools and CRM systems.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluate merchant applications and perform comprehensive risk assessments for account approvals.
  • Analyze transaction data and financial statements to identify red flags.
  • Ensure compliance with payment network rules and internal underwriting policies.
  • Monitor merchant accounts and adjust risk controls, including limits and closures.
  • Conduct ODD and periodic reviews of existing merchants.
  • Collaborate with sales, operations, and risk teams to improve underwriting workflows.

Job Responsibilities
  • As a Merchant Risk and Underwriting Specialist, you will play a crucial role in assessing and managing risks associated with merchant accounts.
  • You will be responsible for underwriting new merchant applications, conducting risk assessments, and implementing strategies to mitigate potential fraud and financial losses.
  • This role requires strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and a thorough understanding of payment processing regulations and industry best practices.

  • Monitor merchant accounts for changes in risk profiles and implement appropriate risk management strategies, including account monitoring, limit adjustments, and account closures.

  • Communicate effectively with internal stakeholders, including sales, operations, and risk management teams, to provide insights and recommendations on merchant risk management strategies.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed records of merchant underwriting decisions, risk assessments, and account monitoring activities.
  • Identify opportunities for process improvement and optimization in merchant risk management practices, driving efficiency and effectiveness.

Pre-Requisites
  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Business, Risk Management, or a related field.
  • 1-3 years of experience in merchant underwriting, risk assessment, or fraud prevention (eCommerce payments experience is a plus).
  • Strong understanding of KYC, KYB, AML (Anti-Money Laundering), and fraud risk management frameworks.
  • Familiarity with payment schemes (Visa, Mastercard, UnionPay) and compliance regulations.
  • Proficiency in using risk management tools, payment processing platforms, and CRM systems.
  • Analytical mindset with strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and handle multiple tasks efficiently.
  • Must be willing to perform shift duties and accept any tasks assigned by management as required.
