Job summary

Qualifications

Job description

The Laboratory Technician will provide technical support for the teaching and learning activities within the Chemical & Energy Engineering Laboratory. This includes:

Maintain a clean, organized and safe laboratory environment for teaching, research and project activities.

Support the operation, maintenance and preparation of Unit Operations and Energy Engineering laboratory equipment and facilities.

Ensure laboratory equipment is maintained in good working condition and available for academic and research use.

Monitor inventory levels and coordinate the replenishment of laboratory consumables, materials and spare parts.

Support laboratory experiments, research activities, demonstrations, and projects by preparing equipment, materials, and workspaces.

Assist in the safe handling, storage, and disposal of laboratory materials and waste in accordance with university procedures.

Maintain accurate laboratory records, equipment logs, and inventory documentation.

Key Responsibilities:
Laboratory Preparation and Set-Up

- Undergraduate Support

Prepare and set up equipment and apparatus required for Unit Operation and Energy Engineering laboratory experiments.

Check laboratory equipment, instruments, and utilities before classes to ensure they are ready for use.

Prepare measuring instruments and data logging equipment needed for practical sessions.

Provide support to lecturers during laboratory classes and assist with basic equipment-related issues.

Report any equipment faults, damage, or unusual operating conditions to the supervisor.

Prepare and issue equipment, tools, and materials required for postgraduate research and laboratory work.

Assist researchers in setting up experiments and organizing designated work areas.

Support laboratory testing, data collection, and equipment operation in accordance with approved procedures.

Maintain records of equipment bookings and assist in monitoring the use and return of shared laboratory resources.

Equipment Maintenance and Inventory Management

Carry out routine cleaning, maintenance, and general upkeep of laboratory equipment and work areas.

Perform basic troubleshooting and minor repairs where appropriate, and refer more complex issues to senior staff or vendors.

Maintain equipment records, maintenance logs, inventory records, and other laboratory documentation.

Arrange scheduled servicing, repairs, and maintenance work with vendors and contractors.

Monitor stock levels and replenish laboratory consumables, chemicals, gases, spare parts, and other supplies as required.

Conduct regular inventory checks and maintain accurate records of laboratory assets, tools, and equipment.

Assist with asset identification, tracking, transfers, and disposal activities.

Support purchasing activities by preparing requisitions, obtaining quotations, and coordinating deliveries.

Assist in preparing records and reports related to equipment maintenance, inventory, laboratory usage, and safety inspections.

Health, Safety & Compliance

Promote safe work practices and ensure laboratory users comply with laboratory safety requirements.

Ensure Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is available, in good condition, and used appropriately.

Carry out routine inspections of laboratory facilities, safety equipment, and work areas.

Assist in the safe storage, handling, and disposal of chemicals, compressed gases, process materials, and laboratory waste in accordance with university procedures.

Follow up on corrective actions arising from inspections, audits, incidents, and risk assessments.

Provide support during emergency drills, evacuations, and other emergency response activities.

Maintain good housekeeping standards to ensure a clean, safe, and organized laboratory environment.

Other Duties

Assist with laboratory demonstrations, workshops, training activities, outreach programs, and special projects.

Support the preparation of laboratories for audits, inspections, accreditation visits, and stakeholder visits.

Carry out any other duties within the scope of the position as assigned by the Laboratory Manager.

About you

To be successful in this role, you will have:

Diploma in Chemical Engineering, Energy Engineering, Process Engineering, Engineering Technology, Chemistry, Science or a related technical discipline.

Experience:

Experience working in a laboratory, technical support, or engineering environment.

Experience in preparing equipment and materials for practical classes, laboratory activities, or testing work.

Experience in maintaining records, inventory, and laboratory documentation.

Experience in carrying out routine equipment maintenance and basic troubleshooting.

Technical Skills:

Basic knowledge of laboratory equipment, instrumentation, and engineering laboratory operations.

Ability to perform equipment setup, routine maintenance, and basic troubleshooting.

Ability to follow laboratory procedures, operating instructions, and safety requirements.

Competency in maintaining laboratory records, inventories, and equipment logs.

Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, particularly Word, Excel, and Outlook

Soft Skills:

Good communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to work effectively with students, academics, researchers, and colleagues.

Strong organisational and time-management skills.

Ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritise work effectively.

Attention to detail and accuracy in record-keeping and laboratory preparation.

Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.

Positive attitude, reliability, and willingness to support laboratory operations.

Familiarity with Unit Operations and Energy Engineering laboratory equipment such as pumps, compressors, heat exchangers, fluid flow systems, process control systems, and renewable energy training equipment.
