Job summary

Private Advertiser in Penang, Malaysia, seeks an Engineering Manager (CAD/CAM) to lead all CAD/CAM activities within Engineering. You will oversee CNC programming, fixture design, process planning, and resource allocation to drive production efficiency, quality, and on-time delivery.

You’ll mentor CAD/CAM engineers, programmers, and machinists; establish SOPs, KPIs, and cost controls; and collaborate across Engineering, Production, Quality, and Customer Service to meet customer requirements.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's/Diploma in mechanical/manufacturing engineering or equivalent
• 15+ years machining experience in manufacturing
• 10+ years CAD/CAM programming experience with 5+ years supervisory/managerial experience
• Strong knowledge of 3-axis, 4-axis & 5-axis CNC milling/turning
• GD&T and blueprint reading proficiency

Job description

This position is responsible for managing and leading all CAD/CAM activities within the Engineering Department. The Engineering Manager (CAD/CAM) oversees CNC programming, fixture design, process planning, resource allocation, and continuous improvement initiatives to ensure production efficiency, quality, cost control, and on-time delivery. The role also provides technical leadership and development for CAD/CAM engineers, programmers, and machinists.

Job Responsibilities

1) Department Management

Lead and manage the CAD/CAM team to ensure efficient programming and support for production requirements.

Plan, prioritize, and allocate resources to meet customer delivery schedules.

Establish departmental goals, KPIs, and continuous improvement initiatives.

Monitor department performance and implement corrective actions when required.

Develop and maintain standard operating procedures (SOPs) for CAD/CAM activities.

2) Technical Leadership

Oversee the creation of efficient, optimized, and error-free CNC programs.

Review and approve CNC programs, machining strategies, fixture designs, and process plans.

Lead the programming of complex components utilizing 3, 4, and 5-axis machining technology.

Support troubleshooting of machining, tooling, and programming issues on the production floor.

Drive process improvements to reduce machining cycle times and improve productivity.

Collaborate with Engineering, Production, Quality, and Customer Service teams to meet customer requirements.

Review engineering drawings and specifications to ensure manufacturability.

Lead fixture and tooling design activities.

Ensure all required setup sheets, visual work instructions, and manufacturing documentation are completed and maintained.

Support NPI (New Product Introduction) and process validation activities.

4) Team Development

Train, mentor, and develop CAD/CAM programmers and engineers.

Conduct performance evaluations and identify employee development opportunities.

Promote teamwork, knowledge sharing, and continuous learning within the department.

Provide technical guidance and coaching to programmers and machinists.

5) Quality & Compliance

Ensure all customer-specific requirements are incorporated into machining processes.

Maintain proper revision control and document management for all programs and setup documentation.

Ensure compliance with company quality, safety, and environmental standards.

Support internal, customer, and regulatory audits as required.

6) Resource & Cost Management

Evaluate tooling requirements and approve tooling purchases.

Monitor department expenditure and identify cost-saving opportunities.

Improve machine utilization and operational efficiency.

Recommend investments in new technology, software, and equipment to support business growth.

Requirements

Bachelor's Degree / Diploma in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Precision Engineering, or equivalent technical qualification.

Minimum 15 years of machining experience in a manufacturing environment.

Minimum 10 years of CAD/CAM programming experience with minimum 5 years of managerial or supervisory experience leading technical teams.

Strong knowledge of CNC milling, turning, multi-axis machining (3-axis, 4-axis & 5-axis).

Thorough understanding of machining processes, manufacturing principles, and process optimization.

Strong knowledge of GD&T and blueprint reading.

Proficient in CAD/CAM software such as Mastercam, SolidWorks, NX, or equivalent.

Strong leadership, communication, coaching, and project management skills.

Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities simultaneously.

Fluent in written and spoken English.
