Ascentis Sdn Bhd is seeking a Database Administrator to manage and optimize databases across SQL Server, PostgreSQL, and MySQL, primarily on AWS. You will ensure high availability, security, and performance while collaborating with Application Development, Infrastructure, Security, and Support teams.
You will handle backups, migrations, tuning, and monitoring, with on-call support for critical incidents and maintenance activities.
Ascentis is looking for a Database Administrator primarily responsible for managing, maintaining, securing, and optimizing the organization's database environments, with additional responsibilities in supporting IT infrastructure and cloud operations.
The role will work closely with Application Development, Infrastructure, Security, and Support teams to ensure databases and supporting infrastructure are highly available, secure, reliable, and performing optimally.
The position covers Microsoft SQL Server, PostgreSQL, and MySQL environments running primarily on Amazon Web Services (AWS).
Responsibilities
Manage and maintain production and non-production Microsoft SQL Server, PostgreSQL, and MySQL database environments.
Provision, configure, maintain, patch, and upgrade databases on Amazon RDS and Amazon EC2.
Perform proactive daily database health checks, including:
Database availability and connectivity
Backup status
Replication status
Failed jobs and scheduled tasks
Database and transaction log growth
Database connections
Locking and blocking
Database errors and alerts
Overall database performance
Monitor and optimize database performance, including CPU, memory, disk utilization, IOPS, connections, wait statistics, and database resource utilization.
Perform SQL query performance tuning, including analysis of execution plans, indexes, statistics, locking/blocking, long-running queries, and other database performance bottlenecks.
Work closely with Application Development teams to identify and resolve database-related application performance issues.
Perform and maintain database backup, restore, recovery, retention, housekeeping, and maintenance activities.
Regularly validate database backup and recovery procedures.
Monitor database growth and perform capacity planning for storage, compute, memory, and other database resources.
Configure, maintain, and troubleshoot database High Availability (HA), Disaster Recovery (DR), replication, and synchronization solutions.
Plan and execute database migrations, including database server migrations, version upgrades, platform migrations, and AWS database migrations.
Support database migration and replication using AWS Database Migration Service (DMS) or other appropriate technologies.
Manage database security, including database accounts, roles, permissions, authentication, encryption, auditing, and least-privilege access.
Assist in database security reviews, patching, vulnerability remediation, and implementation of database security best practices.
Troubleshoot database-related production issues, including performance degradation, connectivity issues, high resource utilization, slow-running queries, locking/blocking, replication failures, availability issues, and backup/recovery failures.
Assist with ad-hoc database queries, data requests, troubleshooting, and database-related technical requirements from internal teams or clients.
Develop and maintain scripts and automation for database administration, monitoring, health checks, maintenance, and operational activities.
Maintain database documentation, including configurations, architecture, maintenance procedures, backup/recovery procedures, and troubleshooting guides.
Provide on-call support for critical production database incidents when required.
Requirements
Preferably a Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Computing, or a related discipline. Equivalent relevant hands‑on experience will also be considered.
Minimum 2 years of hands‑on experience in Database Administration, preferably supporting production or business‑critical database environments.
Strong hands‑on experience administering Microsoft SQL Server.
Hands‑on experience with PostgreSQL and/or MySQL database administration.
Experience with database monitoring and performance troubleshooting.
Good understanding of SQL query tuning, execution plans, indexing, statistics, locking/blocking, connection management, and database resource utilization.
Experience with database backup, restore, recovery, maintenance, replication, and migration.
Hands‑on experience administering databases on AWS, particularly Amazon RDS and databases hosted on EC2.
Familiarity with database High Availability, Disaster Recovery, and replication concepts and technologies.
Good understanding of database security, including authentication, authorization, encryption, auditing, and least-privilege access.
Working knowledge of Windows Server and Linux administration.
Good understanding of infrastructure fundamentals, including TCP/IP, DNS, firewall/security groups, networking, storage, CPU, memory, and operating systems.
Basic scripting or automation skills using PowerShell, Bash, Python, SQL, or similar technologies.
Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills with the ability to identify, investigate, and resolve database and infrastructure issues.
Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively with cross‑functional technical teams.
Good communication skills and ability to work effectively with Development, Infrastructure, Security, and Support teams.
Willingness to participate in on‑call support and planned maintenance activities when required.
