Smartlink Engineering Sdn. Bhd. is a Malaysian-based contract manufacturer specialising in the semiconductor and high-technology industries, delivering engineering and manufacturing solutions to local and international customers.
As we continue to expand our operations in Penang, we are strengthening our team to support new business opportunities and advanced manufacturing projects. This role will be based within a joint venture environment with a European high-technology company, providing valuable exposure to international customers, suppliers and global manufacturing practices.
Our Penang operations are currently located in Bayan Lepas and are planned to relocate to Batu Kawan as part of our expansion. We are looking for a Costing & Project Engineer to join our team and contribute to our growing operations.
JOB OVERVIEW:
The Costing & Project Engineer will be responsible for product costing, sourcing, project coordination and New Product Introduction (NPI) activities. The role will work closely with customers, suppliers and internal teams to ensure projects are delivered efficiently, cost-effectively and according to requirements.
KEY RESPONSIBILITES:
Costing & Commercial Support:
- Review customer RFQs, drawings, specifications and BOMs.
- Prepare product costing and customer quotations covering materials, labour, machine time, tooling, logistics and overheads.
- Analyse cost structures, pricing and profitability, and identify cost optimisation opportunities.
- Monitor actual costs against quoted costs and support cost reduction initiatives.
Sourcing & Purchasing:
- Source and evaluate suppliers for materials, components, tooling and subcontract services.
- Obtain and compare supplier quotations based on cost, quality, lead time and technical capability.
- Negotiate pricing, commercial terms and delivery schedules.
- Maintain supplier relationships and support supplier qualification and performance evaluation.
Project Management & NPI:
- Coordinate projects from RFQ, prototype and pilot build through to mass production.
- Develop project schedules and monitor project progress and deliverables.
- Coordinate cross-functional activities involving Engineering, Procurement, Production, Quality, Planning and Sales.
- Identify project risks and coordinate mitigation actions.
- Support engineering changes, customer requirements and successful product transfer to mass production.
Engineering & Manufacturing Support:
- Review product and manufacturing requirements for feasibility.
- Support BOM, routing, process flow and manufacturing planning activities.
- Coordinate sample builds, prototypes, production trials and first article activities.
- Support DFM, DFA, value engineering and process improvement initiatives.
- Assist with tooling, fixture and process development.
- Coordinate project-related communication with customers and suppliers.
- Attend customer meetings, project reviews and technical discussions when required.
- Provide project updates and ensure timely closure of customer and supplier action items.
- Support customer audits and qualification activities.
Documentation & Reporting:
- Maintain costing, quotation, sourcing, BOM and project documentation.
- Prepare costing summaries, project status reports and management reports.
- Monitor project KPIs and project profitability.
Requirements:
- Diploma or Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Manufacturing, Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical & Electronic Engineering, Supply Chain Management, Business Administration, Accounting, Finance or related disciplines.
- 2–5 years of relevant experience in costing, sourcing, procurement, project management, NPI or manufacturing.
- Experience in RFQ management, quotation preparation, BOM costing and supplier sourcing.
- Experience in semiconductor, EMS, cable harness, box-build assembly, electrical module assembly or high-technology manufacturing will be an advantage.
- Strong analytical, numerical, communication and project coordination skills.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel.
